The sheer range and diversity of packaging across the various brands would suggest otherwise.
If cigarettes sold without being advertised, they would not be advertised.
It's as simple as that.

This is such a load of tosh. Firstly the packaging has nothing to do with advertising. Secondly as a smoker I expected the new packets to be really plain, like brown paper maybe with some text. I have just started to buy my brand in the new style and it's just as covered in words and pictures as always except it's mainly blackm in fact it looks decidedly cooler and macho. Anyone who thinks this has any effect on reducing smoking or is a great idea is puffing in the wind.
Prudie...I am afraid you are wrong. You appear to know very little about advertising and marketing.
Tobacco companies use the pretty, eye-catching packets as the only form of advertising still open to them.
Its a way of showing their products to other smokers, in the hope that they will change, and also a way of making people think smoking is glamorous. Some people still think that smoking B+H is somehow "better" for you than a less glamorous and cheaper brand.
And every time any action is taken against smoking and smokers, the result is that less people will smoke in the future.
And that is a Good Thing, isn't it ?
