I actually like squid, but not with chips. For me it has to be cod or haddock.
Squid with cod or haddock??

;-)
You know what I mean. Cod/haddock and chips, not squid.
The increase in fish like squid and its commensurate availability and lack of expense will never induce me to eat it.

I've always found it tough as old boots though.
Pretty misleading article.

North Sea Cod stocks are actually increasing and rapidly getting back to sustainable levels after years of over fishing. And the national diet is changing too. We eat less cod than we used to do. Instead of Cod we eat Pollack, Basa and Whiting instead.
...only because they are passed off as cod by unscrupulous fishmongers.
I buy basa because I like it
I cannot find any figures, but I know in my town, a dozen chippys have closed in the last 25 years. Instead we have a KFC, McDonalds and umpteen curry houses (and just a few chip shops).

But sales of fish has increased because we are more likely to buy from the supermarket and cook at home.
When I was small fish was dirt cheap and chicken was a luxury. How times have changed.
I can tell the difference between cod and the cheaper alternatives.

Squid is pretty tasteless. And it's not rubbery if cooked right.

I find food is getting cheaper and cheaper.
Haddock's clearly better than cod anyway.
We have just had a new chip-oil open up few hundred yards from me so it is clearly not all doom and gloom in the industry.

Squid is best left to calamari IMHO. It can too easily be rubbery and not really suitable as an alternative to fish. Any why use it anyway there are plenty of alternatives in the white fish space.

Personally I quite like River Cobber, but I have to admit I'm not really a fish person.

I did not know Basa was Catfish. Or that it probably came frome China. But I have been enjoying these lately...

I wouldn't say I have been conned. I like Basa and Pollack and Coley for meals at home.
If I eat out I will have Sea Bass, Sea Bream or Swordfish.
I have an angler friend who sells me (usually in beer) Rainbow Trout if he catches one.
Amazon claim that their Chilean Sea Bass are from the Arctic. Perhaps they are lost?
