I got done for speeding

I've just been done for speeding and am totally shamefaced ! There's no excuse and it was totally my own fault - I was doing 47 in 40 mph zone. I've had a letter through which I filled in, admitted it was me; and posted back. What now ? I'm expecting points and a fine. I've got a clean licence have been driving just over 3 years.

3 points and a �60 fine is pretty standard, I'm afraid. Don't forget to send your licence back to DVLA in 4 years' time to get the points removed!

My friend got done for speeding and she was given the option of going on a one day course run by the police. If she did that she wouldn't get any points on her licence. She said it was an interesting course.

I wish I had been given that option a few years ago. Obviously I was not happy about forking out 60 pounds although I know I was in the wrong. I was devasted about getting points put on my clean license. I have never been caught speeding since.

I was on a 2 lane road that merged into one at the bottom. I had to overtake a horsebox which was going slowly, and wanted to overtake it safely enough to leave clearance between us when the road merged. Thats what you get for trying to be conscientious !

In Devon and cornwall you can go on a 3 hour course.no points deducted.As long as its your first time.(:)

hubs just been done for speeding he was about 7 mph over the limit too, he got three points and �60.  He got no option to go on a course, I did however hear that if you do get the option to attend a course, you have to pay for it and its roughly the same amount as the fine. (not sure how accurate this is, but its what I heard).

I wouldn't get too hung up about it. It's not like drunk driving where somebody is being deliberately wreckless, pretty much anybody can miss a speed restriction sign or have a moments distraction these days and get caught by a camera.

My stepfather had a replacement hip recently and drives like he walks and he got caught recently at 3mph over with a caravan.

You'll have to be caught anothre 3 times in the next 3 years to loose your license and from your past record that's unlikely.

rebby i am not going to patronise you but you should never have admitted the offence.

Next time go to court and build a defence. Trust me there are sooooooo many out there.

For example I got off a speeding fine just because i had my car radio on. That particular gun they used has a small variant with electical output. The seed of doubt was there with the local magistrate and hey presto my case won.

I agree, given the fact it was me doing the speeding i see no reason why I should try and avoid my punishment.Thats what really ****** me off - people who clearly have committed an offence and try everything they can to get away with it !

I'm with you rebby............the most upsetting thing is having those points on an otherwise unblemished licence.     It's infuriating but you'll get over it.  You'll have to be extremely unlucky to accumulate 12 points in 3 years.

My point is I admire your ultimate honesty. But speed guns, gatso, radar, uncalibrated Police speedometers etc etc can be wrong.

YOU are entitled to a free and fair trial. That does not make you dishonest. It's called BRITISH LAW.

PS Gef I have got off about �800 worth of fines, have a totally clean license, great insurance premiums and a clear conscience. All because I believe in justice? And you have the rudness and ignorance to call me an idiot?

W-M in ma book, there's a big difference between being innocent and getting away wi something. You say you got off fines totalling �800-is that something to brag about?  I'm sure in yir own mind you're a great driver but to have that many prosecutions seems to indicate otherwise......

In response I agree with you. Yes I am an excellant driver. I know what you are thinking "bragging so and so" but surely I can only working on evidence?

Never had an accident, never caused one. Never worn a clutch due to ultra smooth gear changes. never speed in the wet/fog/built up areas. Only drive tip top condition cars and estimate about 30-40 thousand miles a year. always wear a seatbelt, always change and check tyres.

Getting off my fines is something to brag about. It's not like i get off with rape or murder is it? It is my point that the question setter has set. Get it? Big deal she went 7mph too fast (if she accepts she did). We pay enough taxes and revenue to this grabbing govt. and I can assure you speeding tickets are just a money spinner. As I said I do not speed in built up areas so if I did get one near a school or blind person home or whatever I would challenge my conscience. Yes I would still get off with it but believe me my driving attitude will change.

Speed does not kill on its own merit. Further I must add that ALL my tickets have come from mobile patrols who (against the rules!) have been hidden away. How dangerous can that stretch of road be if the Police/Local auth. will not place a permanent camera there and are happy for a mobil traffic cop to set up a gun? I ask you!

Being entitled to a free and fair trial does not make anyone dishonest.  Saying you didn't do it, when you did makes you dishonest.

You say you're an excellent driver but if you've been caught so many times (bearing in mind, these are just when you've been caught) that you've managed to evade �800 worth of fines means you are more likely to be a sh!t driver. 

Not having had an accident or caused an accident doesn't necessarily make you a good driver.  I have seen countless incidents, including 2 in the last 7 days, where accidents nearly happened because of speeding drivers.  These accidents were averted purely because of the excellent driving of the innocent party.

Getting away with something is not the same as being innocent.

It's not the stretch of road that's dangerous, it's fcukwits speeding on that stretch of road that are dangerous.

rebby - this happened to me after 17 years of very careful and considerate driving.  I was caught fair and square at 4am on some roadworks where a temporary rstriction was in place.  I do not agree with the above that you should have denied it, particularly as you remember the incident and probably the 'flash'.  But what I would suggest is that you request the photographic evidence, at least for reassurance that it was your vehicle caught at the time of the offence.

I was awarded 3 points and a �60 fine (who gives training options or warnings nowadays????), and if anyone says that it is difficult to accumulate 12 points in 3 years they are talking pap.  If you offend you pay the penalty simple as that.  It is hard to accept that you have broken the law, but take this as a warning and drive safely in the future.
