And she hasn't even opened her mouth yet !

What an asset Mrs May is to Britain....the cause of a 20% drop in the value of Sterling.

Rockyroad // you are way behind the times with farmers subsidies. Set Aside, the payments you are referring to that paid farmers not to use their land, was abolished in 2008.//

okay, has any one told some of the farmers that continually bang on about it?
//I only brought it up because he made the initial (and demonstrably false) claim that the UK's R&D budget is stagnant because of our EU membership.//

False from your perspective, correct from economic context of this thread.

/// We'll never agree on this, I want the country to have a chance to stand on it's own two feet
again ///

Before we can stand on our own two feet again, we must first grow a backbone.
"False from your perspective, correct from economic context of this thread."

... Wait, what?

jim; for the record, The UK pays more into the EU budget than it gets back.
'In 2015 the UK government paid £13 billion to the EU budget, and EU spending on the UK was £4.5 billion. So the UK’s ‘net contribution’ was estimated at about £8.5 billion.'
So not only will the UK science get back what it now receives, the government will have £8.5 billion extra for science, arts and whatever, money which is presently being squandered on excessive salaries and pensions for the EU bureaucrats and assorted madcap projects.
The planned parliamentary elections in France, Germany and the Netherlands this year could see the Euro fall.
Why thanks, Khandro, I had never realised that the UK was a net contributor to the EU overall...

Oh, by the way, I was being sarcastic just now. In Science and R&D, at least, we get more back than we put in, in percentage terms.
This isn't the first time the £ has fallen, nor will it be the last, but it WILL be strong again. Not a fan of May, but I don't blame her for this !
Small price to pay to not capitulate to the merchants and money movers. Necessary in order to regain sovereignty. Short term annoyance anyway. Now we just must hope out authorities don't start signing up to TTIP and CETA type trade agreements and give it all away again.

//Before we can stand on our own two feet again, we must first grow a backbone.//
We did grow a backbone, we voted to leave!

//"False from your perspective, correct from economic context of this thread."

... Wait, what? //

The thread was about the economy and the relative ups and downs of the pound. The research funding you noted were programmes that have not produced significant economic benefit to the country as yet. This is where I was going, what research has produced something of economic benefit.
I guess it's sensible to just leave the discussion of the economic benefits of present R&D (funded by the EU or otherwise) for another time. Thanks for clarifying what you meant, though.
jim; //Why thanks, Khandro, I had never realised that the UK was a net contributor to the EU overall... //

Always pleased to be of help! :0)
Jim, I haven't read the whole thread, but does this help?

//Scientists have welcomed a government commitment to underwrite all research funding commitments made before Britain leaves the EU, even if the projects continue for several years after Brexit. //

I'm afraid I can't access that link (paywall), but I think I was referring to that story already anyway, in my post at 14:59. If the government makes similar financial commitments for all other EU-related grants and subsidies and the like, it would be welcome; what's really needed is a long-term change in attitude from the UK government towards R&D, which has been neglected in recent years.
Jim, Not to worry. At least you know the commitment is there from my copy and paste.

//what's really needed is a long-term change in attitude from the UK government towards R&D, which has been neglected in recent years. //

Is that because in recent years it's been funded from our contributions to the EU do you think?
It's an interesting point but I think the UK's R&D spending has been fairly low, proportionate to GDP, for rather a lot longer than the EU picked up the slack. Some of the figures are confusing me, however, so I'll leave it there.

Again, though, there is more to the EU's contribution to UK science than just money we can underwrite.
OP - "What an asset Mrs May is to Britain....the cause of a 20% drop in the value of Sterling."

Jesus, you couldn't make this sort of nonsense up!
How on earth has a thread that starts with this ridiculous statement

''What an asset Mrs May is to Britain....the cause of a 20% drop in the value of Sterling.''

Reached almost 100 replies?

Haven't read the thread but have you retracted the statement, mikey?
Jim, //Again, though, there is more to the EU's contribution to UK science than just money we can underwrite.//

If you’re talking about multi-national projects, the optimist in me tells me that will continue to happen regardless of Brexit.
It's simply ridiculous (and hysterical) nonsense Mr Talbot. I agree^
