So it would seem that having a gifted child is not enough.....parents of Grammar School kids will need to be wealthy as well.

They can ask, but it don't mean they'll get. All schools ask for cash to help plug funding holes
All schools ask for voluntary contributions.
My kids' school asks for a voluntary contribution of £30 a term, per family.
Ours seem to ask constantly for money. Sometimes I give some and sometimes ignore it.

But these hundreds of pounds are not to pay for special things, like outings....its to pay the normal running costs of a school. What if the parents can't afford these extra payments ?

These donations are needed because of cuts made to education budgets.
No, they are for both. The payments are voluntary, so they can only ask. They do fundraising events as well.

This won't effect us here in Wales, as we don't have any grammar schools, but I pity people in England.
They won't pay if they can't afford to- same as all the other schools.
It's a sign of the times, not enough money going into the schools to equal what has to go out.
well your lot abolished them mate!
They aren't abolished.

So, already we have a two-tier schooling system and now we may have another split within the schools themselves....between pupils who parents can afford these extra payments and those that can't.

Sounds like the bad old days when those that had free school meal, who had to join one queue, and another for the ones whose parents can afford the meals.

It doesn't seem very egalitarian to me.
well surely there are some work houses to take the poor kids.
It isn't two-tier and there is no difference between the parents that do or don’t pay- there isn't allowed to be. And some children still do get free school meals...
//This won't effect us here in Wales, as we don't have any grammar schools//

Pity the people of Wales!.
The majority of Schools are forever asking parents for contributions not just Grammar schools.

Its a democratic decision here in Wales....no Tories and no grammar schools !

Its the way we like it !
You like less choice?
and doctors would like you to pay extra for out-of-hours appointments

A good time to be well off.

Mamy...if you read the link, you will see that this is a new departure, forced on Grammar Schools by cuts in funding.
