Go easy on Mikey! He's still recovering from finding out today that there are several Guardian readers on here ;-)
The cause is still unclear but looks like the end for the pier despite the long campaign to get it sorted.

Have we combined the Jokes topic with News now or are some posters just lost?
Is it just me who is a trifle puzzled by this obsession with Piers that we have in Britain ?

So you can walk right out to the end and then walk back again.....so what ?

Mikey, it depends if you are a fan of amusements!

I didn't realise the costs in this case were so high.
Most seaside places that I have visited have plenty of amusements on the Prom. These Piers cost a fortune to restore so is it any wonder that so many of them are falling down ?

I think to some folk being able to walk on a wooden platform out to sea is kind of fascinating.

There have been a few stories of fires and collapsing piers over the years.
Vortex....I guess its just me then, but they underwhelm me I'm afraid.

I think they add a bit of character Mikey.
A lot of rust more like !
Saw you post on Wednesday Vortex, but did bite my tongue and resist posting. It has been an issue locally for some years, particularly the behaviour and tactics employed by the Council in the demise if this wonderful old pier. Some have always felt that there is an ulterior motive for the Council's behaviour, namely seeing the waterfront as a target for revenue, perhaps licencing for jet skis and the like which is not possible whilst the pier stands. Now there are allegations of sabotage surfacing. Sabotage by the Council themselves in anticipation of the storm that has just struck. We shall see.
