i think jack was more omni-sexual :)
I am a huge Dr Who fan and tbh I don't really care what the companions are like. In as much as they could be from the planet zoo and they would still be a companion.

What I think is wrong is to make an issue of someone's sexuality just because someone wants or needs to tick a diversity box. And I do hope that it won't become part of a major storyline.

Who bloody cares if the companion is gay? It shouldn't even be an issue and I fail to see why it should even be mentioned unless it is integral to the story and not just shoehorned in for diversity.

Although I think Michelle Gomez is absolutely fantastic as Missy/Master I would not want to see the Dr change sex. The Dr and the TARDIS are the only constants in an ever changing invironment and even when he changes the constant still needs to keep the equilibrium intact.

The producers have said that the character is gay. They are not making an issue out of it. It's simply mentioned.

Others are making an issue out of it.
Did you not see the BBC(who else)broadcast a full 5 minute in depth interview with the new "character" in the week then sp? Made a thing about it them I'm sure.

And?

The BBC, ITV, CH4 and CH5 always promotes their new shows with interviews with cast members. This will also be done on This Morning, The One Show, Lorraine etc.

The vast majority of Dr Who fans will simply accept the character, and not boycott the show, as someone earlier on this thread has announced.

Perhaps this is because the show's audience demographics skew towards younger viewers who don't get upset at seeing a bit of diversity on programmes aimed at them?
I remember when a similar thing with Red Dwarf back in the late eighties oooh it's two leading character's were black Dave Lister (Craig Charles) and Cat (Danny John-Jules) nothing tempted the Points of view watchers more to put pen to paper and have a moan.
Wow, prime time girl on girl action eh ? What's to object to ?

/// Dr Who debuted on television in November 1963. ///

/// That was over half a decade ago. ///

When one sets themselves up as an expert by pointing out slight mistakes that other ABers might make, they should first make sure that they never make enormous mistakes, as you have made above.
Is November 1963 not more than five years ago?
Hartnell..Troughton and Pertwee the best Docs..have not watched it at all since them days...are we still at risk of planetary take over by the Daleks ??? exterminate..exterminate !!
AOG

Not knowing the difference between a decade and a century, it would seem it is you who should "keep up".
Several posts were pulled last night for nasty snidely comments. Hint.
Is "When one sets themselves" correct?
//Perhaps this is because the show's audience demographics skew towards younger viewers//

Indeed, it used to be under 10's. Is it aimed at 'grown-ups' now?
I think it tries to blend tales for the young with over their heads stuff for the nostalgia seeking audience. Probably caters to the latter more than it ought but you'd need the kiddie view to be sure.

Teens to twenty-somethings it seems now.
Does it really matter if the Doctor has a black/gay assistant ?

This is basically a children's program, that has out-grown its origins.
