Is 490 million too much?
Apparently according to some here on AB there is a great deal of pride in holding a navy blue passport! But is 490 million too much?

It's clearly very symbolic to some but I just don't get it. I doubt it will cost that much will it? I rarely look at my passport- it's just serving a purpose. Waving it with pride at foreign airport staff seems unimportant to me

But 490M is nothing in the scheme of things- we save that in the first few weeks won't we. We need to sort the big issues out and get out quickly as possible on the best terms. The colour of the passport seems a trivial issue to me in comparison but some see it as symbolic s if it makes them happy and boosts morale, maybe it's worth it

So the present contact ends in 2019 so there would have been a big cost anyway- and it will be recovered by the existing passport charging system- so i would not rely too much on the figure being the cost of making the colour blue

We have to have new passports when we leave the EU, but I can't see why the colour is an issue as far as cost goes. Would a colour other than navy blue be less expensive?

As the link says, the current contract is coming to an end which has gotnothing to do with leaving the EU. People will just get a new design when their existing passport expires and it will be whatever colour is chosen. My bet is that it will be blue and not rigid like the old blue ones of old.

Yes, i think there is confusion here. I don't believe we will have to change all passports in time for the date we officially leave the EU- it's just that when our passports expire after that date there will be a new design. I don't see the marginal cost of changing to blue being great if it's just changed at renewal time.

Can you imagine the bedlam if we all had to change out passports at the same time? we didn't do that when we got the EU ones and we won't have to do it when we come out. I reckon they will be a similar colour to the American ones.
