Sorry Jim I didn't realise you were being ironic. It's just that on here people (sometimes myself) say daft things occasionally.
When I was at school I was a bit peeved that some classmates had extra holiday during term time. Wasn't fair.
And ironically the school takes the kids on holiday in term time. I don't remember much education going on when we went to PGL or Longtown. Unless you really need how to escape from a capsized boat or do a bit of rock climbing or maybe a bit of absailing. All those skills have taught me that I've never needed them!

Going to France and Germany at least made us practice our language skills and Germany taught me to never ever drop litter.
what a plonker, it was obvious he was wrong from the start, yet a bunch of leeching parasites have made a wedge out of this stupidity. Please tell me it wasn't legal aid!
TTT....he's a wealthy man.
TTT - // ... what a plonker, it was obvious he was wrong from the start ... //

Apparently it wasn't obvious to him!

There are always people who will fly in the face of common sense - and legislation, if they believe they are right.

Often, as in this case, it takes a court case to prove - even if not convince- them that they are wrong.
great ummmm then pay the kin fine and stop wasting everybody's time. It's obvious to anyone he'd lose. It's the saucepans I feel sorry for they are going to go through life believing that if you can afford it you must be right. Frankly he's not fit to be a parent.
I'm glad he didn't win as well - arrogant plonker !
Holiday homework still has to be marked by the teacher. Teachers prepare their lessons in off-time & suffer same holiday expense.
Harsh, TTT. It's a frigging holiday, not someone who leaves their kids off school because getting up in the morning it too much of a chore!

I stick by rules, even when I don't agree with them. So please don't slate me.

The last time my son was given permission to be off was to stay with my mum after my nan died.
ummmm: "Harsh, TTT. It's a frigging holiday, not someone who leaves their kids off school because getting up in the morning it too much of a chore! - yes it's a holiday, of which there are at least 14 weeks in the school year, use those, and this guy can afford it by all accounts. I'm not slating you I'm slating the plonker in question.
TTT - my holiday next month cost £1,500. If I booked it during school holidays it would cost over 3k.

This is for two adults. No kids. Some people simply can't afford it.
I agree with ummm. Some parents may not be able to take leave during the school holidays, also the cost is much more expensive. I don't think that a week is going to ruin a child's education, and I say this as a former teacher. One solution might be to shorten the summer holiday and add extra weeks during the spring, but I fear the problem would just self-perpetuate as costs would be adjusted accordingly.
yes but the bloke in question can, you said he was wealthy, so he's doubly wrong. I'd rather something was done about the blatant profiteering by the holiday mob.
Use a private school & holiday when you like.
JD, I can understand that and sympathise but what annoys me here is the fact that this bloke failed to accept the rules. Take your kids out of school and pay the fine if you must but don't try and get that over turned out of some misplaced "I'm right and the law is wrong" charade. If it is indeed that much cheaper in term time then the fine should be no concern.
TTT - as I opined earlier - if you make the fine less than the additional cost of the holiday in holiday time, then parents will simply opt to pay the fine, and go ahead and take the holiday, so if the notion of a fine is meant to deter parents, it's clearly not going to work!
You have all miss the real reason here .
This bloke was acting out of a sense of Altruism , in trying to make it better for less well off parents , who can't afford holidays when school are out
Eventually it boils down to the school. My last headmaster was so soft he would grant anything. One day in the late 80s I noticed a girl in my class was missing. The Head came to my classroom and said that she was absent with his permission. On further enquiry I discovered that the reason for the absence was so that she could queue all day for a Bros concert. When I tackled the Head abut this he went berserk with me, accusing me of questioning his decision. It didn't improve matters when I told him that I was not questioning his decision, merely his judgement. My teaching career stalled at that point.
Andy: "so if the notion of a fine is meant to deter parents, it's clearly not going to work! " - who said it would? this is about some plonkef getting the law overturned because he cannot agree. If you want to deter then make the fines a lot more.
bazille: "This bloke was acting out of a sense of Altruism , in trying to make it better for less well off parents , who can't afford holidays when school are out " - cobras, he's an attention seeking prat who wants his 15 mins of fame.
