If anybody still thinks that Russia is a benign force in the world, they can now see, quite clearly, how Putin supports his friend, Assad the Butcher. This is now the 8th time that they have vetoed resolutions at the UN.

Can't argue with that mikey. Something has to be done, and soon. Innocent people are being murdered.

// Assad the Butcher. //
I thought he was an eye-surgeon.
//Russia has called for an independent international investigation, and questioned how Western powers could have assigned responsibility for what happened so quickly.//

Worthy of consideration?
Had the UN resolution been passed an immediate investigation could have been carried out: now,
Russia's calls for an 'independent inquiry' are delaying tactics.
ichi; Do you have an objection to an independent inquiry, and if so why?

Khandro...was that supposed to be funny ? People died in the chemical weapons attack, and you think its a time for humour ?

Of course Russia is playing for time.

If Russia won't cooperate, then the UN should act anyway.
ichkeria. that isn’t how I read it. Anti-Russia sentiment seems to be de rigueur at the moment so an independent enquiry seems the fairest way to elicit the truth – if that’s what the West really wants - but I have my doubts.

Any enquiry would take months and in those months, Russia would continue to prop up the regime of the dictator, Assad.

The only reason that Assad has stopped using chemical weapons on his own people is because Trump has threatened to destroy his capability to do so again.

I have made his comment before, but I will do it again::::I am far from being a supporter of Trump, but on this issue, he has acted quickly and decisively. While the UN faffs about in New York, he actually did something useful....something that should have been done years ago.

Russia should be held to account here, and explain why it is propping up Assad the Butcher. Its obvious to everybody why it is doing that of course....in order to get a warm-water Port in the Med.
Mikey, I really don’t think a time factor can be used as a reason to deny an independent enquiry. Truth is paramount – isn’t it?
They as bad as each other. The truth is a stranger to both of them!
Some people cannot get it into their heads that 'anti Russian sentiment' is based on Russia's actions. If you doubt they a UN sponsored investigation, which would involve the surrender of Syrian flight logs, inspection of premises with publication of all or any the evidence, would be 'biased' then that is up to you. Anyway, isn't it Syria that is in the dock here over the use of chemical weapons, not Russia :-)
Question Author
Boaty...I have no doubt whatsoever that the chemical weapons were launched from Syrian planes. After all, Assad has plenty of previous form in this area.

Its time to get tough with him and Putin....the free world have been faffing around for years.
I can see how an enquiry might establish the facts, but with the rest of the International community already believing the existing evidence and deduction is sufficient, I can't help thinking they can't all simply be jumping to conclusions. And how long does an enquiry take, and how likely is it to uncover more evidence, especially since any evidence will be rapidly being removed as we debate ? On balance it looks like a delaying tactic to me, but we'll see how it goes.

OG....of course its a delaying tactic !
BTW if Putin did try to affect the US Presidential election in order to get Trump elected; well that worked out well for him, at least so far.
ichkeria, //Anyway, isn't it Syria that is in the dock here over the use of chemical weapons, not Russia :-) //

Debateable.
Question Author
Boaty....well deserved BA !
I can only imagine the - justifiable - outcry had the US demanded an 'independent inquiry into the St Petersburg metro attack for example, or indeed our disgust had Russia called for an 'independent' inquiry into what happened at Westminster recently.
Question Author
OG...however Trump got elected, its all water under the bridge now, and we are stuck with him, at least for the 3+ years.
Question Author
lol Itchy !
