The argument against the Monarchy (especially in a Constitutional Monarchy like here in the UK) for me always falls apart when the alternatives are considered. Whenever new elected posts are created (such as mayors, police commissioners and so on) immediately from the woodwork emerges an assortment of slime-balls, time-servers, party hacks, washed up...

i dread to think what mischief he'll get up to with all that spare time on his hands

Happy retirement Prince Philip.x
perhaps he is ill and doesn't want the world to know, i sincerely hope not.
ummmm I can see where you are coming from.I don't think I'm in love with him, but I will be very very sad when his time is up.
Will he be entitled to Attendance Allowance, as its just gone up by 55p?
I am almost 30 years younger than him and couldn't do a fraction of what he does. Where he gets the stamina from is nothing short of amazing. Same applies to HM.
Good luck to him .By the way if needed I can do Every other Wednesday .
jackdaw Absolutely. It never ceases to amaze me how the Queen walks up and down steps without holding on to a rail, I can't do that.
Barsel neither can i, and i am a good deal younger than her Majesty.
Islay....I have explained this many times in the past, but I am willing to do it one more time.

I have nothing against the Queen personally, only the Office she holds. If she want to put herself forward as a candidate for President, than I am more than willing to vote for her. But its my opinion that in this day and age, we shouldn't have a head of state that is there purely due to an accident of birth. It isn't democratic in any shape or form.

And the phrase Betty is meant affectionately, in the same away as "Queenie"and "Brenda"
I accept that there are many people out there who feel that the Monarchy is an anachronism in 21st Century Britain. I can understand that point of view but it is not one I share.

But it is telling that they then have to follow-up any such statement with personal attacks, or snide comments, which make them look no more than jealous, petulant and spiteful.
jth
couldn't agree more..
Good on him, hope he enjoys himself. He's brought me many a chortle over the years.
Will he be going to Ascot?
I was hoping to wave at him this year.

Mikey, I stand by my post that the use of the word Betty is disrespectful.

If you were introduced to any lady and she was called, Elizabeth, would you straightaway start calling her Betty.

I think not.

Bad form dear boy, bad form.
All the Elizabeths that I know are called Betty !

But why is Betty disrespectful and Queenie isn't ?
bang on JTH, BA candidate there.
I dont think you have been disrespectful in the least Mickey. Royalists unfortunately often look to be offended when someone is not in love with Royalty. I am with you on that too.

Anyway, back to the OP, I'd like to wish Phil the Greek a happy retirement and thank him for all the entertainment he has provided over the years. I suspect I wont be saying the same about any of his sons or grandsons.
//It isn't democratic in any shape or form. //

....but it's the way the head of state has been determined for hundreds of years. not really sure why having a popular vote for a head of state would be better for the country - according to the EU remainers, the electorate are not to be trusted.....
I shall certainly miss his many gaffs....lots of entertainment over the years !
