The argument against the Monarchy (especially in a Constitutional Monarchy like here in the UK) for me always falls apart when the alternatives are considered. Whenever new elected posts are created (such as mayors, police commissioners and so on) immediately from the woodwork emerges an assortment of slime-balls, time-servers, party hacks, washed up...

Well he will be 96 next month. I think he's earned his retirement, almost 80 years of military and public service.
I think he's earned the right to put his feet up....

May your retirement be a long and peaceful one Sir.

He looked so fit when filmed at Lord's cricket ground last week, but at 95, these duties must take it out of him.
Good for him. Just wish her Maj would hand more of her duties over to other members of the royal family.perhaps she will, when she feels the time is right.
I agree, I wish him a long and happy retirement. I guess it would be different if he felt able to take things easier in public but he won’t. I remember that long barge journey down the Thames in the rain where he wouldn’t sit even for a moment.
Wishing him a long and healthy retirement, I fainted when he came to open the playing fields near my home in the late 1950's but that was probably the sun! Why did they have to get all the staff from all the residences down to London for the announcement though, surely a co-ordinated announcement could have been made to staff at the various houses etc.? It's created a lot of speculation and, for some, anxiety.

It's just the way it's "done" Zeno, I guess.

Zebo. Sorry. :)
Maybe Princes Andrew and Edward can take up the slack?
Only just retiring at 95 so he has earned a restful retirement. But with Queeny still going strong he might have to wait awhile before he gets to go to Warners adult only holiday centres.

Step down from what exactly ? Being the Queens husband ?

This reminds me of what my old Dad said, many years ago, when Princess Margaret scalded her foot, while on holiday in the Caribbean. " on holiday from what ? "

For the record, he done a sterling job in the past but he should have retired many years ago. There are plenty of Royals left to take over his duties, and there always has been.

Perhaps Betty can now retire to Balmoral and let that son of hers get on with his allotted job, before he snuffs it.
Andy...they would both have to get up off their asses first !
Question Author
"Betty!" How disrespectful, Mikey.
Yep good luck Sir, you've certainly done your bit, get your feet up!
Never been a fan of the man, but my God - he's put the hours in. Also, he's had to put up with a number of royal protocols which many of us would find unconscionable (not being able to to give his kids his name, giving up his beloved job and all those official dinners/speeches).

I honestly don't understand why he (and the Queen) should be expected to work until their on their last legs, especially when there are others who could have taken up the slack years ago.
Chrissa......Cassa called her "Queeny" earlier....isn't that disrespectful as well ? If not, why not ?
mikey - //Andy...they would both have to get up off their asses first ! //

Precisely my point!!
