If the headline read:


Police force ditches traditional bobbies helmets for cheaper and more comfortable US-style baseball caps

it's unlikely to have attracted so much attention from those who wish to express anger at political correctness.

I agree that if it were the *primary* reason for such a change then it's a bit off, because the first concern for police officers should be safety. But if that's not compromised in any way, isn't it generally beneficial to ensure that the recruitment pool for Police Officers is as large as possible? Something that discourages, or could discourage, a subsection of the population from ever wanting to apply is something worth ditching if it's simply an "optional extra".

As to whether or not it will be effective in increasing recruitment among trans* people, who can say? But if it does, then I'd regard that as a benefit; and, if it does not, then no harm done.

Perhaps we should read the whole article before deciding.

There are nine reasons given for this uniform change.

One of them is a positive move for transgender people.

People shouldn't concentrate on that in order to give ourselves a nice warm feeling of annoyance.

It is not that easy getting into the police 'force' (sorry wrong PC term again) 'service', given the reduction in numbers etc.

So if vacancies do become available then they should take on the most suitable applicants, regardless of gender identity or skin colour etc.
