I'm not sure how they can calculate just how many 'non-binary gender-free/neutral' people have been put off by the current headgear....

But the rest of the reasoning is sound.

I think that a 'Bobbie's Helmet' has a certain gender attachment.
The point of the old helmets was to prevent them being hit on the head. I'm not sure that was ever a problem as such, but the baseball caps don't offer much protection
Jno, take a closer look, they have got a reinforced crown. I can see its a great saving to just have one type of headgear for all officers...I think the gender defining choice thing is just bandwaggoning though
Question Author
Maybe they will let some officers wear them back to front?
Yep OG, and go on the beat(if they still do)on skateboards.
or even at a "jaunty" angle for the non-pc pc?
The policemans helmet has always been the source ov mrth an merryment.

I remember chanting " whose the *** in the party hat" and " whose that **** with a t i t on his head".

Also if you are ever been chased by a bunch of plod dont look round as you will fall over laughing at some poor copper running with his hand on his helmet.

Basically they are impractical and should be resigned to dress occasions only.

As for the LGBT rubbish, there is no need for all that just change is because it is daft.
Of course they will need new pants to enhance the look. You know the ones with the crotch somewhere around knee height, baggy with tight elasticated bottoms.
Those old bobbie's helmets look very outdated and impractical now imo ...
Good grief ! They look like officials at the sports stadium there to show you where your seats are. Wonder if they'll help if you ask for a corn dog ?
The baseball caps look far more practical and its common sense.
Cheaper, lighter, more comfortable and affords better protection.

Not much to dislike is there?

I once almost decapitated a PC wearing an old style colonial helmet (accident truly) we made friends afterwards.
These are no more then bump caps, often worn by mechanics working on HGV's, OK for a bump on the head but no protection for the side or rear. So long as we train the muggers to hit them on the right place the police will be safe.
They'd look better with a pair of shorts and a vest.
It seems like a pretty good idea...mostly.

the new headgear means that no longer will male and female officers be issued different headgear with varying safety ratings simply on the basis of gender

However, whilst the new caps are more practical than helmets, I would've thought that some extra strengthening on the skull and peak would be in order. As it is, baseball-style caps don't offer much protection.
It probably is a good idea - but not for the reason given.

C'mon sp ... you don't think they are off the shelf from Sports Direct do you?

I wear a baseball style hard hat here in Germany, perfectly legal.

There are nine reasons given for this change in uniform, not one.

However, as the Daily Mail only refers to one of the reasons in it's massively click-baity headline, it's reasonable that people might assume that this move is solely to attract transgender officers.
SP, //There are nine reasons given for this change in uniform, not one. //

Are there? I don't know what the other reasons are but in my opinion the one given in this headline is not valid. The other eight might be though.
