Its a great pity that more people on here today can't feel some sympathy, instead of this complete lack of empathy.

Sympathy. Yeah, I feel a great deal of sympathy for the minewoekers union leaders who priced themselves out of the market. If the devastated communities wanted to vent their anger at anyone, it should have been Scargill and his cronies. Hard to get at Scargill tho in his union funded London pied-a-terre.
As I have argued many times on here Thatcher was a *** but Scargill was no better.
Coal was on a constant decline from the beginning of the 1900's
and was always going to be replaced ... but what about the steelworks and shipbuilding?
Thatcher decimated both of those industries, if she was the genius some of you make out she would have made us world leaders by turning round the fortunes of those industries.
Cruise ships are being turned out like no tomorrow many of those ships should have been built here.
Just to be clear Tony Blair's Labour didn't seem interested in reviving them either.

Apologies to Mikey about the "day without coal" accusation. I believe it was Eddie who brought that to our attention. I can't always be right :-)
