This case bears more than a slight resemblance to Shipman.

Just how did this Surgeon perform so many unnecessary operations on people, without all the other health professionals smelling a rat ?

It makes you wonder if his registrars didn't suspect something was wrong - Or did they, but was too scared to blow the whistle

Should throw away the key for all the pain and suffering he's inflicted (unnecessarily) on his patients, both male and female. Despicable man.
It makes you wonder if his registrars didn't suspect something was wrong - Or did they, but was too scared to blow the whistle
Chilling.

Shipman was a murderer, I don't think he made any financial gain from his victims.
This man carried out needless operations for financial gain but as far as I know didn't actually kill anyone.
I agree that Jail is the best place for him.
Baldric Shipman attempted to make financial gain out of his last victim by forging the will - this basically led to his downfall as up to that point his victims family had not been suspicious.
But the change in will was too much to handle.
perhaps the other prisoners will remove parts of him for no good reason eh?

So he didn't make any financial gain from his victims then Islay?
He attempted to Baldric
Dame Janet Smith saw Shipman's attempt to manipulate the will as a decisive act.

//She said he might have deliberately bungled the forging of the £360,000 will that eventually trapped him because he felt "an overwhelming need to stop killing."
She went on: "Either his plan would succeed and he would run away with the money, or he would be caught. Either way, the killing would be stopped."//

Full attempt at trying to fathom his motives here.Old but still relevant.

It won't be the same for all but I think power is strongly to the fore in many of these cases.

thanks for the BA mikey .

He must have got some perverse pleasure from wielding the knife
How many of the 15 yrs will he have to serve ?
I think there is definitely a 'God' complex at work here, boosted and abetted by the unwillingness of subordinates to challenge someone who rules all he surveys.
There is a documentary on Chanel 5 tonight which may shed some light on how well warned his employers were.....and if they failed to act on warnings......we shall see......x

For those that can stand it, there is a special program on Channel 5, at 22:00 tonight.....not sure if I will be watching it, as I am very squeamish !
Don't know about God complex - more like greed. He carried out these operations on private patients
// It makes you wonder if his registrars didn't suspect something was wrong - Or did they, but was too scared to blow the whistle//

they probably didnt - Paterson was doing a lot down the private hospital where the registrars dont lurk ....

I listened hard to the patchy evidence - and no one ever said
Paterson shortened patients lives....did they ?
// He must have got some perverse pleasure from wielding the knife//

I dont think we know what surgeons are thinking when they do operations that they know dont work

I dont think any of them have told us.

by all accounts, the people who hired him were warned by his previous employers that he was trouble; and some of those who worked with him resigned.

It sounds as though rats were smelt - possibly not the actual crimes he was convicted of - and nobody wanted to know.
Och Mikey, just take a deep breath and try not to squeam. :)
//How many of the 15 yrs will he have to serve ? //

According to BBC television news tonight, 7.5 years.
