When my Mum was in an isolation ward with meningitis we were told many times by different nurses to wash our hand first with soap. They said it was more effective against germs and bugs than the gel. We also used the gel after washing
I was probably quite young when I still believed the 'Hot water kills the germs' - it's obvious really if you had water hot enough to kill anything, you'd be off to the burns unit.
As stated above, whatever is available and comfortable for you.
I never thought that hot water was better than cold for washing hands properly....it's the physical agitation and soap/detergent that removes bugs. To be as effective, the hot water would need to be near 100C...not really possible!
I have always used cold because I can never wait for the hot water to come through (I know thats changed now but I am still too impatient).
My evidence is that cold is best is that I am not dead.
according to Dr David Bull on Matthew Wright show this morning, its the fact that washing your hands properly, as he said that most of the bacteria is between the fingers. so no matter hot or cold water
