These are attempts. It is ludicrous to try to calculate the number of illegal immigrants because, by their very nature, we don't know.

They must know how many they discover in transport from France, and by the very fact that they are smuggling in vehicles mean they are illegals.

Mainly because the government and various agencies don't want to publicise how completely clueless and inept they are when it comes to protecting our borders.
This is due in part to cutbacks in frontline services over years by various administrations.
It's just cheaper to let a number through than properly fund border controls.
Let's see how it works out when some disease raddled timebomb makes it here and chaos ensues.

They are only Illegal Immigrants if they are caught. Otherwise they are unlawful residents in the UK.

The sooner the better when we regain full control over our borders and anyone caught entering illegally is immediately returned to the country from which he/she came. Immediately, I say, not allowing them to drift around on Bail and then disappear from all view.

I think it is fair to assume that under 10% get caught and so appear on the news. Remember only 7% of the trucks that come across from Europe are actually searched! There are just too few staff and it would cause too much delay to search more!
So multiply the number caught ( it must be on Google) by 10 and you will be getting close!

Many people who are now illegal immigrants in the UK came here quite legally.

They came here on student visas, holiday visas, entertainment visas (giving entertainment to immigrants already here), sports visas (coming here to play in a sporting event) and so on.

The trouble is once they are here many then don't go home.

So not all illegal immigrants come here in the back of a lorry from France.

Mind you for those who don't go home at the end of their visa we should be to easily get a total number for them.

It should be possible to get rough extimates from the amount of resources, food/water etc being consumed vs the number registered to live in an area.

For instance if the supermarkets think they are feeding 2 million in a town of 1 million then you have 1 million unaccounted for. That or a load of big boned Americans are stopping in the Town!
