JC and his pals hold up Venezuela as a pillar of socialism, but look at this. Is this how we want our country run?

He always has but they still flock to him as if he were the other JC able to put right all the supposed wrongs.

When they are scratching around in the bins for food to feed themselves and their families they will understand.

The trouble is though that they will drag the rest of us down with them.
The Westminster atrocity was rightly condemned by everyone as a terrorist attack. No one in their right mind defended it as a legitimate attack on Conservativism.

Yet a terrorist attack on the Supreme Court in Venezuala is being presented as evidence of a failure of Socialism, and proof of something (no idea what).

I guess it fits with some peoples' wider agenda, so they are unable to condemn it, and almost support it.
Socialism cannot work, full stop. This kind of thing illustrates the extremities but what I find more disturbing is that grown ups with an IQ that is alleged to be greater than their shoe size, despite all the evidence to the contrary, believe it can work.
Erm no I would not like an authoritarian government that relies overwhelmingly on oil for its revenue.

Not sure either of those things were in the Labour manifesto either (although I do believe the first one did colour the Tory one somewhat). So I don't consider this a profound conundrum.
3T - Venezuela's crisis has not happened because Chavez funded hospitals or social services. It has happened because 95% of their exports are oil-based and the oil price has collapsed.
The sad thing is that venezuala is a potentially wealthy country but it's wealth, like Russia etc is in the hands of a few gangsters. The problem is that well meaning politicians like jezza and co are blinded by the light!

What on earth are you on about Gromit, this was a protester, ok I dont agree with throwing rocks but to shoot someone dead, inf fact 79 now for being anti Government.

//The death toll now stands at 79 after three months of street protests against the government of Nicolas Maduro.

The president has been blamed for a crisis marked by shortages of food, medicine and other basics.

//

Socialism is not working.
at best socialism is a laudable aim at worst it's organsied crime, QED!
You are aware that socialism is not one single ideology or system, aren't you?
some variants kromo, no doubt, but all the same fundamentally. They all require that human nature be changed and as such cannot work.
I don't see how Labour's manifesto commitments require human nature to be changed.

Nor, actually, do I see what trying to alter human nature has to do with Venezuela's problems.
Certainly I'm not aware of any "homo sovieticus" style projects to recreate people being undertaken by Labour or PSUV, but maybe I've not been paying attention...

This reminds me of the story of the shop steward who was haranguing his men in the yard when a fleet of cars carrying the directors passed by on their way to lunch.

"Look there", he said, "see the bosses smoking their fat cigars while you have to do with Woodbines. Come the revolution you will all be smoking cigars."

A voice pipes up from the back,"Actually I don't like cigars but I'm fond of my Woodbines."

" Come the revolution brother, you'll smoke what you're bloody well told to smoke"!
Right.

So a parable about a classroom experiment proves conclusively that investing in hospitals, welfare and public services is what is responsible for the problems in Venezuela... and not the crashing oil price or the government's authoritarianism.
ok I'm I'll all ears, kromo, explain kromosocialism for me......
Invest in public services when necessary.

Have an effective social safety net and public healthcare so that people are not killed by poverty.

That's it.
