Short of banning the sale completely what can be done to prevent these attacks.?

I am surprised by this:

"By the 1830s, a Glasgow periodical editorialized, “The crime of throwing vitriol has, we grieve to say, become so common in this part of the country, as to become almost a stain on the national character.”"

Don't understand why, if we're the fifth/sixth largest economy on earth, we can't build more prisons. Bang 'em up. People say prison doesn't work. It does. While they're banged up they can't rape my wife, burgle my house or raid my bank account.
I agree with that, scooping - we need more prisons and short, sharp prison sentences for offences that currently get community service, preferably in solitary confinement.
The first fortnight is the worse for a first time offender, before they acclimatise to prison and get into the prison routine. Maybe it would put them off reoffending.
Thank you hc: It is perhaps a truism that if we bang up all the bad guys there will be less crime. So let's do it.
// Make it an automatic life sentence...//

I'd agree. This kind of deliberate disfigurement seems about one of the most despicable things one person can do to another.
How many of those who post the 'we need more prisons' rants would be prepared to work as a prison warder?
The prison service is severely understaffed as it is.
Prison officers think of themselves as unappreciated and that many think they are very little better than those they have to lock up.
I know prison officers who have gone 16 weeks 7 days a week without a single day off. They find leave booked months in advance is cancelled with just days or even hours notice , with no compensation for missed flights and holidays!
In addition they are always in danger of being attacked by the inmates they have to look after.
So do you want the job? If not where do we get the thousands of extra officers that it would need?
I have an idea, allow more immigrants in as long as they work as prison officers
Oh, Prison officers are not allowed to take industrial action or go on strike either!
I should hope not, Eddie - striking would be chaotic.

Prison officers do get rubbish pay and conditions and their lot should be improved. I'll be thinking of them when the smoking ban comes in to effect
// mainly due to poor housing and unemployment, but they were a close knit society and never experienced the outrages that we 'ALL' witness today.//

um no the slums were NOT safe in those days
and children were routinely assigned to accompany toffs who stood out

classic example of "recall bias"
ze Fransh were prone to burning holes in German uniforms ( les sales boches huh ?) with acid during the occupation
( of France obviously )
became a capital offence apparently
