Not all travellers. Mainly Irish travellers.

gulliver1, a permanent site doesn't work. A council in Northern Ireland tried this, they donated a site and built nine or ten bungalows on it with enough space for their vehicles and motor homes. Inside a few weeks everything in the bungalows had been sold including radiators, doors and copper piping. The fact that the bungalows quickly became uninhabitable didn't worry the residents, they had already jury rigged the electicity and were enjoying free power in their caravans having moved back into them.

Surely it is not too dificult to metre out the laws & local byelaws to deal with this uncivilised lot. Do them for illegal parking, non payment of local taxes etc. Illegal use of everything one can think of. Come on Councillors are not stupid & forget the ''ooman bleedin' rites''

Do any of you even know what a Traveller is? No you don't because your ludicrous generalising covers many types, races, nationalities and groups of people, some of whom bear not the slightest resemblance to any of the others.Can we not tar every single member of the Roma, Sinti, Irish, Lovari, New Age and Tinker etc communities please? Could we make just a tiny effort to properly identify exactly who and what we are talking about before we call vast swathes of people 'scum' etc? I have seen some horrible mess and problems etc in some traveller camps which needs dealing with and no mistake and on the other hand we have families who winter on our ground and have done for years and years who have caused no problem whatsoever either for us or the local communities. There is also the situation that there are an inadequate number of resting places and traveller sites across the country, which needs addressing because people don't have to live according to your culture whether you like it or not, they are entitled to live according to their own as long as they don't break the law- you just assume they all do, which ins't actually accurate. Ummm has a point, have any of you ever actually seen a Gypsy fight, because if you have then your half arsed ideas about how hard you all are would soon go out of the window. You can't just go in blazing with riot squads, that is ridiculous. You would never dream of discussing another race publicly online with some of the adjectives I've seen here either, truly shocked at how many people appear to think that's acceptable. I think this whole thread is disgraceful.

I agree it's a huge problem and can blight an area whilst it goes on - however why is it that it is only 'not difficult' to solve from people sat in their armchairs or office chairs.

I know just what you mean vulcan , I was jesting, we own a six acre field and the Local council decided to build a permant site for these scum , right next to our land ,away from the village , and only affecting us. sigh of relief in the end when the council relised they could not afford it.

Dealing with these people is no different to dealing with any minority group that causes problems: The authorities seem to try the namby-pamby approach for fear of being labelled (something)-ist, whereas a tough approach from the start may be better.

Ummm the question made no differentiation about anyone or anything, just used the blanket umbrella of 'Traveller' which was what I was addressing. I agree it generally is thew Irish travellers that cause the most havoc as well, seen it myself, but you still can't lump people together the way some on this thread appear to, when it patently obvious they've never even spoken to a gypsy.

I agree, Kav, I'm met some decent travellers and some scum bags of the very very violent nature. It's the latter that's the problem.

The Irish travellers are mainly not Irish. They have that weird accent because they don't integrate. Some of them are 3rd or 4th generation Irish...
