What did concern me was their attitude that he would decide whether on that day that he wanted to "act" like a boy or a girl. In other words, the parent's input was minimal. If they take this approach on ALL aspects of child development,then he will not understand guidance or discipline,which in my opinion all children need.

Really? Schools and the playing fields are areas of total peace and tranquillity then?
I agree sqad on the guidance issue, there is also a growing problem where mothers want to be their childs friend not their mother. My wife started to do it with our youngest, it didnt work and she soon changed her tune. Being a parent is hard work 24/7 you are not a friend but there to help guide them and show them the 'rules'.
Of course these two may do that and only allow the gender bit to be free.

YMB - Primary school children don't start bully people for being different. That comes later.
He will start school as a boy, be expected to wear the relevant uniform and conform to their rules. He then can express himself at home as much as he wants.
My youngest son opted to play with girls toys and would happily wear his sisters dresses. We didn't pay heed to it...he was happy.
On the other hand my other son didn't like wearing clothes at all and would strip naked as soon as we got in the door.

I beg to differ. If children were left to their own devices they maybe would not but they wont be. They will be influenced by their parents and I can imagine the reaction of many parents to these two pitching up at the gate. It may be wrong but it happens.

Approaches like that aren't going to change if they are just allowed to happen, though.
Bullying will always be a problem, but to take that as a sign that you may as well just let it happen, or that the best way to stop bullying from happening is to avoid giving bullies something to target, is the worst of all possible approaches.

YMB...I'm only going on what the doctors told me about bullying. My daughter had a very bad squint and I was told she could have corrective surgery from the age of 7.
1) because if corrective treatment hasn't worked by that age it probably never will.
2) it's about the age kids start noticing differences...and bullying starts.
He identifies as a boy. He'll be sent to school as a boy. He's likely to get as much stick if his parents were obese, goofy, cocked eyed, stinky...name whatever.
I'm sure they'll prepare him for what others might say.

Got an answer to it then jim? It's human nature, you may not like it but most people are competitive and will look for any way to get one up or be 'king'.
