what do you want, a Labour leader who does what the unions tell him, or one who doesn't? Or do you just damn them if they do and damn them if they don't?

a labour leader that didn't allow his administration to fall into a trap like this would be good. a labour leader who (in the stylee of Mussolini, maybe) can actually clear the streets of accumulated refuse, rats, etc would also be good.
