We stopped receiving child benefit a few years ago when they brought in the earning threshold (which, incidentally I agreed with).
My understanding was if you earned over a set amount you could still receive it, but had to pay it back. Seemed pointless to me so we opted out.
I don't know whether it's still the case, but the child benefit thing was a classic case of thinking that defied any logic. If there was only one earner and they earned in excess of £60k, they either opted out, or had to pay it back. But if there were two earners earning below £50k each, they were still entitled to receive it.
So in other words, somebody earning £60,001 was subsidising child benefit for a couple who could be earning £49,999 each.
Bananas.
