It is very difficult for us as citizens to know what reality on the ground is since all we get on the News are the "big" crimes, ofte with guns. This may or may not reflect the mojority of criminals.
As TTT points out, I can understand why Police would not want to carry a gun. The criminal would have more rights and undoubtedly we would see numerous Police men and women dragged through the Courts to fullfill the liberal elite right-on thinking.

Obviously I cannot speak for the rank and file police officers, but I suggest that they prefer not to see the use of guns escalated to U.S. levels, which would be an inevitable result of arming them, coupled with the fact that they know that if guns are carried, they get used, and that is often not the best way to resolve an issue.
