These are primitive people being shown something they have never seen before.

If you want 'respect', show it to the diplomats of the countries in question, if you want amusement and bemusement, show it to the population who are unaware what on earth they are looking at.

Oh, and while you are about it, lighten up for heavens sake - do you think the Morris Men would get their hankies in a twist because some people thought they were odd or amusing? I doubt they take themselves that seriously - maybe you shouldn't either.
