Whoopee!
I feel sorry for people who aren't from Yorkshire :-)
Not going to happen. Must be a slower news period than I realised.
I'm not a fan of elected Mayors. We already have too many layers of Government. A mayor for the whole of Yorkshire is a ridiculous idea. It is too much power for one man/woman and party.
I would favour some powers being devolved to local authorities, but that seems to be contrary to this Government's desire to weaken Metropolitan Councils.

I can't see it ever happening, not all the authorities are on board.

It does, however, highlight the difficulty in keeping a country stable. When one section is allowed to break themselves off, then there's nothing preventing a nation splitting into numerous near powerless autonomous regions. How does one allow an area to secede when & where appropriate and yet stop tragic break up where an area simply sees an opportunity for personal benefit ?

A good point there OG.
A country-wide, strictly enforced limit on the consumption of alcohol is all that's needed to stop ridiculous ideas like this ever seeing the light of day.

I think they tried that in the US. It produced the rise in power of the likes of Al Capone!
That was prohibition Bog, I'm advocating a limit around the point where folk start talking complete carp and making fools of themselves.

I hate it when you have to explain the joke.
gromit is correct the last thing we need is more layers of politicians with their snout and trotters in the trough. Personally I'd abolish the devolved "parliaments" too and the lords, the mayor of the cities etc and most of the town halls of the uk. In my town we have 59 councilors, gawd knows what they do apart from claim exes. They have kin "cabinet" F\F\S !

Perhaps you should try being funnier. :P
There was quite a serious Sunday morning politics programme devoted to this a couple of weeks ago. I half expected Michael Palin to enter, screen left, and claim that Rhubarb revenues would plummet if we got independence.

Quite ridiculous. And i'm a Yorkshireman.
