It's also a generational thing, I'd have thought. We *all* look on the past, to some extent or another, through rose-tinted specs; my own personal past is obviously rather more limited than most people's on here, but it's certainly no slur to say so. It's the human condition, is it not?

//Kehinde Andrews, a professor at Birmingham City University, has declared that the British Empire “produced a toxic national identity”
“All of this injustice is the direct legacy of the British Empire that often made its place in the world through genocide, slavery and colonialism.//
Perhaps he would rather be resident in Zimbabwe or Rwanda? Paragons of racial "harmony" donncha know.

I think he was exaggerating his case. I do wonder if there are a few too many people who look back on Imperial days with rose-tinted specs, but that's not quite the same thing.
I do wonder if there are a few too many people who in their head are living back in the 'Imperial days' This is a great country regardless of your colour.
I feel sorry 'for the likes of' Kehinde Andrews, AOG and mikey ... it must be awful waking up in a morning with nothing on your mind than looking for the next race-based argument.

Talbot -- obviously it goes without saying that it's just as bad to refuse to acknowledge the progress we have undoubtedly made, as ymb refers to for example. The difficulty is that people seem determined either to think that there's nothing more to be done or there's everything to be done still, and don't allow for the middle ground.

Please don't feel sorry for me, it's the likes of you that I feel sorry for, if race base threads upset you so much, why don't you hop over to ChatterBank and ask the question "What's for tea tonight"?
Incidentally Race Base threads are among the most popular threads, perhaps it is because one gets little chance to voice one's opinions on such matters, for the fear of being called racist, and the media, the authorities and the police seem just as scared.
By the way wasn't this one of 'your' race based threads, where you became the victim of the moderators, before you got your thread off the ground.

Talk of rose tinted specs, I would love a pair if I could see this country in the eyes that some on here do.
But I do not need anything, only my long memory, so as to remember this once great country that it once was, all those many years ago.
Yes we went through a world war with all the dangers that produced, after we still endured great austerity much more than today's so called austerity. But everyone carried on in that long lost British bulldog spirit.
Regarding that so called big bad British Empire, we gave the people employment, railways, bridges, viaducts, Dams, Public Buildings Law and educated their future leaders in our universities.
We must have done something right because when they gained their independence, rather than be ruled by their own leaders, huge numbers of them chose to leave their countries and come to Great Britain.

TTT "think he means the Union Flag"
As an aside the Lords of the Admiralty noted in 1902 that it was acceptable to use the term Union Jack for the flag wherever it was flown and this was given Parliamentary approval in 1908; taken from here http:// hansard .millba nksyste ms.com/ lords/1 908/jul /14/the -flying -of-the -union- jack

This man is clearly not an idiot, but his views are somewhat extreme, and I would suggest they are without real merit, and are not especially thought through before being expressed.
But it is just his opinion - I think the best thing to do is ignore what he says, it's not rational enough to be worth debating.
