I googled and as far as I can tell they have the death penalty for killing a police officer or committing murder whilst on a life sentence. Maybe federal laws applies in terrorism cases. Does that allow execution? This is not a debate about the rights and wrongs of executions.

In fact homosexuality is far less common in jails than in the outside world.
Nalit who has been in prison several times agrees with me on this. 'Queer bashing' is still rife in prisons. Anyone male suspected of being Gay in prison is in danger of a severe beating rather than anything else.

Eddie - // Locking him up will be far worse to Muslim eyes and may deter other prospective Martyrs from doing the same. //
I would suggest that any Muslim terrorist will accept any punishment offered, it will never deter any others from the same actions because they believe they are right in what they are doing, and accept punishment as an occupational hazard of being the 'believers' they see themselves to be.

Given the horror of this man's actions, it's entirely easy to see why the emotional response is to call for his execution, and I suspect that President Trump, with his mind ever on the opinion ratings, will want to look like he is in tune with the people on this.
But a president needs pragmatism, and that means careful consideration, away from the emotional knee-jerk response.
President Trump is in a difficult position - an execution will give a large proportion of his voters satisfaction, but it will also make a martyr out of the criminal.
Prison may also give a degree of martyrdom status, but in my view, it would the better option for the president to pursue.
As keyboard opinionators, we can all say what we think, but as President, he has to make the decision, and live with the consequences.
