But I would have been claiming a great victory for Trump had the Republicans won.

These were elections for governors rather than Senators.

Not clear they mean that much. You have to wait for the midterm elections next year, really, to see which way the US public is going on Trump -- and even that may not be a very good signal, as the Democrats have something like 27 of the 33 seats up for grabs already.
