Surely a finite date and clarity of when galvanises the effort made to sort things out??

This has been on the news website for ages so if it has already been posted ... sorry.

any step on the way to implementing the democratic will of the majority will be attacked by the Vichy British. Start worrying when they do not use such platitudes.
I don’t know what the fuss is. The much more important issue is under what terms we will leave.

I agree Zac. So why are they piffling around creating a snow storm over this?
Because, as Tora says, every aspect of Brexit will be the subject of opposition, and rebel MP scrutiny. It’s called politics.
We leave the EU 2 years after we submitted Article 50, so that is 29th March 2019.
If the date is put into legislation, it means that if negotiations are not complete by that date, then we will crash out of the EU with nothing to replace it. The ‘No Deal’ scenario.
If it is not etched in stone, then we leave ourselves wriggle room, where we can carry on seeking a deal after 29.3.19 if both parties agree. It is in both the UK and EU interest to have an orderly parting, and legislation that makes running out of time as the most likely ending, is not desirable, especially as 29.3.19 is a proper deadline anyway.
It is a gimmick because just because a date is set in law now means absolutely nothing. The date legislation can be unlegislated.
there'll be no deal gromit, the EU won't negotiate until we agree to give them some sort of spuriously claimed "divorce" settlement.
There will be a deal. Businesses will start pressuring the Govt more than they are at the moment.
for once I agree but it will be the German, French et al business leaders that will start kicking. I just cannot fathom why Barmpot and co wont talk about trade. We can come back to sticking points.
Whether there is a deal or not is for another thread.
But running out of time because ‘extra time’ has been ruled out by legislation, would be a calamity.

The only reason for locking a date is not for the good of the country, it is to placate the hard brexitters in the Conservative Party, so May can cling on to power.
I think it will pan out a little differently. The effect of no deal on British businesses will become the main talking point.
There’s nack all more to discuss on the subject of this thread Grom.
It was said from the start that the 2 years was not set in stone and more time to negociate may be needed. So why should we now rule extra time out? It took 17 years to negociate joining and leaving is a lot more complicated.
Didn't Mrs May go to Florence a few weeks ago, begging for another 2 years ?

Fantasists think if no deal has been agreed, that the UK can walk away without paying anything. And that fantasy extends to them thinking the EU will still trade with us if money is outstanding. They won’t.
Is 29.3.19 not two years and a day from 29.3.17?
I don’t think it’s a black and white as that Grom. Some companies will obviously still trade with us as it’s to their advantage to do so but the implication of tariffs then raises its head.

I agree about the fantasists though. They also think we can just cherry pick trade from other countries which will magically fill the void of those who don’t want (or can’t afford) to trade with us.
The EU won't need our money, they will be twice as rich when we leave.
The PM didn't "beg" for anything, mikey, she's better than your beloved Saint Tony always begging for a way to stay. Sad how the Vichy British always side with the enemy, true to form I guess.
"The EU won't need our money, they will be twice as rich when we leave. " - err how? who's been the second largest contributor for 40 years? Where are they going to get all that dosh from now then? No wonder they are panicking.
