Can anyone explain how this could work.

From the BBC less than an hour ago. Surely as NI is a full part of the UK it can not have a separate arrangement from the rest of us?

We have sleep walked into a United Ireland.
When I say *we* I really mean the Conservatives and the DUP.
No it can't, but as the only part with a land border with another nation, it could have a border which has rules that don't apply elsewhere.
The majority of NI will not accept an united Ireland.
It is most peoples idea of hell
Islay...........I am not sure that anybody is seriously suggesting a united Ireland, at least not in the context of getting around this thorny problem of Brexit and a hard border.

The BBC's political editor said Mr Lamberts had said the UK was prepared to accept that Northern Ireland may remain in the EU's customs union and single market in all but name. But, she stressed, the BBC has not seen the draft document nor has it been signed off.
Sorry the link went missing

As mikey has just pointed out , within minutes the DUP said it was not acceptable. If they withdraw support from May then the government falls.
Question Author
Not sure what went wrong there the BBC link vanished , I have put it on again at 16.52
Naturally Mikey, that's why we need a soft border not a united Ireland. The DUP have already said they want that.

What link ?
It's concessions to Dublin that the DUP won't agree to.
Unsure what concessions are being suggested though.

OG , the first link vanished I have put it up again at 16.52
Not that I can see.
//If they withdraw support from May then the government falls. //

No it doesn't it simply becomes a minority Government.
Question Author
OG my entire post at 16.52 is the BBC link . I reposted just the link without my comments.

omg can you imagine what Ian Paisley would say if he were still alive (or maybe what he wouldn't say as he'd be speechless with rage....)
Ah you posted text from the link. Well unsurprised the DUP wasn't going to stand for that load of cobblers. What utter utter moron suggested that ? Clearly that's a non-starter. No one can possibly think that, that was going to fly. Someone was having a laugh.
But of course, they've not seen the draft document so it may be nonsense. I mean the story as opposed to the suggestion.
Paisley an McGuinness will be sharing a pot of tea in hell and having a right good laugh.

I am at a loss as to what the answer is to this mess.

I literally can't work it out.

I've read this piece on the BBC website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-42180074

..and it looks like there's no way either side can compromise.

It's going to be interesting.
I, also, can't see that a compromise is possible EDDIE - I've been aware of this from day 1, which is why I've been advocating preparation for a 'no deal' scenario from the very start. The something in the woodpile is, as I posted elsewhere, Gibraltar. Spain is salivating and will withhold eventual approval unless we cede Gib..
All this is not possibly acceptable in any way whatsoever, so, wearily, I return to 'prepare for no deal'. EU will wish to strike deals for their goods and services, but we need enough world-wide deals to tide us over - so we need to jump the gun and start negotiating them - to heck with EU rules, quite frankly. What are they going to do? We must, as a matter of survival, take the reins into our hands.
