Every other nation in the world accepts that Tel Aviv is the place for a foreign Embassy. This move by Trump will jeopardise any Middle East peace process, and cause widespread rioting and loss of life. Is there no end to this mans madness ?

Several countries, including the USA, have consulates in Jerusalem, but their embassies are in Tel Aviv. In doing this the USA is, in effect, laying its cards on the table and coming down firmly on the side of Israel. It seems to me that the thinking behind it is ‘enough is enough’ and it’s time to put a stop once and for all to the on-going uncertainty. Doubtless it will inflame passions - and that, in my opinion, is going to prove to be an understatement - but whether it is a good move in the long term remains to be seen. I have my doubts. Jerusalem is one of the strangest places on earth – but that’s just an observation.

Israel has always regarded Jerusalem as its capital city, so does it really matter if the US does also?

Regarding the plan to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, it isn't planned for a few years yet, so why all the rumpus, much could alter before then.

But the rest of the world doesn't currently recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital city. As I said earlier it matters to the Palestinians.

They've lived for many years with their nearest enemy considering Jerusalem to be their capital, and have never done anything about it, so why take on one of the most powerful nations of the world?

There is some agreement going back to the 60s which commits the US to moving its embassy to jerusalem, but apparently every year they sign a waiver to put the matter off for another 12 months.
As if that wasn't bizarre enough, we now have this intervention by Trump: it was one of his many daft campagn promises, so it depends whether you admore him for sticking to his script, or think that his script belongs in the bin :-)
It does seem an unhelpful decision, regardless of eanything else, as most of the rest of the world recognises Tel Aviv. Why stir things now for the sake of a promise?

The original vote by the US Senate was in 1995. The result was 90 to 0 in favour.

And then earlier this year……

Like jim360, until today I didn’t know the issue with Jerusalem. Now I understand that it forms part of the disputed area in the region.

I don’t know what the upside of Trump’s decision is. I’m sure the Israelis will be happy with this move, but in practical/political/diplomatic terms, it seems like an incredibly dangerous move.

My daughter, who is an American/Brit on a gap year in Tel Aviv and who I saw today, she is shaking her head at how stupid this is on the White House's part, so representative of that Pres that supposedly heads the USA, as the Jerusalem prize as the capital and taking all the embassies over there was to be when a satisfactory peace resolution was sorted out with the Palestinians.

For Trump, her words, 'I didn't vote for him or Hilary - and this is a case of one step forward and may well be ten backwards in the region, to the point that I may not be able to go back for semester 2."

'Sqad diagnosis' for the moment in that we shall monitor and react over Christmas accordingly. (I'm going up to pick her up from seeing friends and family early next week).
