Your rather quaint hypothesis would hold water if everything was Hunky-Dory in the 1990s. Unfortunately it wasn't. There were housing problems and pressure on public services a-plenty. So the question that needs to be asked is if there were those problems in the 1990s (which showed little sign of being properly addressed) why was net migration allowed to increase from an average of 36,000 per annum in the early 1990s to an average of over a quarter of a million per annum in the last five years?
Since 1990 the UK population has increased by 8 million from 57m to around 65m (that we know of) now. Net migration in that same period totalled just under 5 million. With those simple numbers how anybody can argue that migration has not had an enormous influence on the problems facing the UK's housing and public services is a little hard to fathom.

My hypothesis was tongue in cheek...and aimed at the noughties rather than nineties - because a young Pole I knew in 2005 assured me that there were then 600,000 Poles in the UK - he was one of around ten working in a hotel in the sticks and the locals had lost their jobs in short order because these visitors had no home life to consider and would work any time for any duration, retiring occasionally to their caravans hidden away in the grounds. I questioned his maths but he was adamant, being well connected both here and in Poland.
A large engineering company that I was involved with at that time had loads of Polish welders working night shift - they were delivered and collected by agents with buses - not minibuses.

Mamya- do the Site Rules state I'm not allowed to give an honest opinion? (That's actually a genuine question- I've never read the Site Rules because I have, what is referred to in the medical world, A Life. Anybody who has read the Site Rules needs to stop wannking, leave it alone for a bit, and go outside for some fresh air. It's looking like it might be a nice day).
