Part of me is glad he is not coming especially after his apparent use of derogatory language in his description of migrants.
But part of me feels sad that a world leader does not have the gonads to come to country that has been friends with the USA for many years because he is afraid of a few protesters!!
Heard on the news headlines (radio) at silly o'clock that he had cancelled as he thought Obama had sold previous Embassy for peanuts and had been overcharged for the new one.
This has beggar all to do with Obama. He is sending Tillerson instead.
He has cancelled this visit because he doesn't want world-wide headlines of him having to cope with mass demonstrations. Personally, I would much prefer him to keep to his original promise.
the state visit is going ahead..just this Embassy trip that's cancelled... we will be responsible ,largely, for the security on state occasion.. not so for the Embassy opening.. although Scotland Yard must be nervous
Tillerson is dignified and statesmen-like and the staff of the Embassy deserve someone like that that to serve on the day, instead of the frankly embarrassing Trump.
I'm not sure I believe that he is refusing to come because of protesters - he had protesters constantly during his campaign, I imagine they must be part of the scenery now.
Any chance that the gloaters now, will be the loudest and first to scweem when trade seals with the US turn out to be "problematic" or travel documents become harder to obtain?
It won't help relations, but with a President determined to put the US above all, trade talks would be difficult anyway, and we've yet to find a half decent negotiation team. Perhaps postponing talks until reasonable negotiators have been identified on both sides, may be the best plan. A lot can happen between now and then.
Good on him. Why should he open Obama's extravagant and misplaced monolith? And if I was him, I would be in no hurry to come to Britain where he is reviled on all sides, harangued by the rabble and would be doing little to further America's interest to do so.
