Regarding the shackled siblings...it doesn't bear thinking about. All I can think is "why?"

It's often after the fact that 2 and 2 come together.

There's photos of them out, nicely dressed.
Ummm........I am not sure how recently those photos were taken.
It's just been on the news. Showing pictures of them on holiday. It couldn't have been that long ago as the youngest is only 2.
You may be right Ummm.

If so, and the condition of the kids were as the Californian authorities has stated, then I would have thought that there would have been some evidence of the torture and abuse.
// Read and pay attention to what Kval says.
And you are forever putting America/Americans down.//

yeah Mikey, be told!

( and yeah in case anyone has noticed the fact that one person Kval has done it does NOT validate the practice - but what the hell this is AB.)

I have to say I thought the koranic schools were trying to pass themselves off as home schooling and so escape regulation ( in the UK) - these are the places where they beat the crap out of the kids if they dont memorise the koran goot, or quickly enough
Welcome to Answerbank, the home of sweeping statements and generalisations.

Whilst acknowledging the dark side of this thread some of the comments are the funniest I have read in sometime. The ignorance and utter blindness of a poster is breathtaking.
Peter it's not just me, thousands of people are home schooled, most without event, get a grip, all people were trying to point out were Mikey's factual inaccuracies.

Whether or not these kids were homeschooled or not is neither here nor there.. the fact remains this allowed them to largely go off radar and the non existent monitoring empowered the parent's abuse / neglect. Had they been in main stream education then this whole sorry business would not,in all probability, have occurred. A sad indictment of the times that any persons who noticed anything untoward did not bring it to the attention of the appropriate authorities. Perhaps a more structured and answerable method of home schooling ought to be considered.
Well said Minty !
I agree, Minty. When I was teaching any sign of abuse or neglect was quickly noticed and brought to the attention of the relevant body.
Anyone ever read 'A Child Called It'? The police officer who dealt with the case said it's the most harrowing cases of child abuse.

That child went to school. Concerns were raised but abusers tend to be good liars! Look at the baby P case and how the mother managed to convince social workers that everything was fine.
Yes, and I recall little Daniel Pelka, which upset me no end a couple of years ago.

But the point I was making is that if some minimum involvement and inspection by local authorities are in place, then incidents of this kind would, at least, be a rarer event.
Baby P was a tragedy... however I think in this case of not one ,but 13 progeny, being involved, a marker would have led to a more thorough investigation here..or I would hope so at least. A very sorry business..
The one kid went to flaming college, people DID see them, they all went to flipping Disneyland and various weird Elvis blessings for their parent's marriage. People saw them and did nothing.
Ummm is correct. We had a case at school about 30 years ago where a young boy would come to school clad in thin, soiled clothing in all weathers. No breakfast. The staff, both teaching and ancillary, kept spare clothing for him at school. The kitchen would feed him for nothing if he didn't have any dinner money. The social worker assigned to his case concluded that they were a close-knit, loving family (members of the Salvation Army) and declined to intervene.
Given what has happened to the American kids, its looking very plain why the Parents chose this home-schooling in the first place. It wasn't to give them a wonderful education, that's for sure.

Due to their extreme religious beliefs, and incipient cruelty and wickedness they were free to carry out the torture.
And there lies the crux Kva...the children obviously lived in some kind of conditioned fear and nobody picked up the signs or felt so inclined to ask questions..."all it takes for evil to triumph......"
