I spent 6 weeks in this prison 20 years ago, at the end of an 8 month sentence. It felt like 6 years at the time. It was just as bad (perhaps even worse) then.
Just curious as to how some people...here and elsewhere... continually see prison as a holiday camp? Not argueing about the rights and wrongs of prisoners or their conditions, just curious as to how people can still equate going to jail with a holiday in Butlins?

The state of some of our prisons is disgraceful. I heard the person in charge of Liverpool being interviewed on the radio this morning, and the reason why this is so is complicated. But money is a major factor.

Mikey, having had first hand experience of this jail (not the Daily Mail hype) I can say that I honestly understand the high suicide rates in prison. In Liverpool (Walton) the screws were bullies to a man.
Prisons are full of the bad, the mad and the sad...
Ive said before that there are people in the nick that need treatment, not punishment.

I have never subscribed to the 'Holiday Camp' theory - I can understand why some people get cross at documentaries about the newer well kitted out establishments as they themselves are struggling to pay a heating bill etc - but what price freedom?
With the older prisons that have been left to rot it becomes a vicious circle, one broken window becomes a row of them and damage follows damage.
At the very least an attempt to smarten things up using the captive workforce they have there would be a start and may encourage inmates to take care of better surroundings.
I also agree there are many who should not be incarcerated and of course some who should be but aren't.
