Well despite the OPer continuing his childishness and ignoring me, this has been a great thread with interesting contributions from both sides of the argument.
On top of that, I have been informed of some fascinating things that have surprised me.
Gromit's father voted for the National Front.
naomi was brought up in a commie environment.
And women were not given the vote because they were silly.
Not all voters are bright. We meet many dim adults in our lives, and they all have a vote. Denying 16 year olds a vote because you think they are not politically astute, is not a valud reason.
It might be a good idea to put lessons on politics into every senior school. Then at least they would have some idea of what they would be voting for . At the present time most 16 years old youngsters either don't have a clue or couldn't care less .
gromit; "Youth are not born left wing and it is something they grow out of. " - indeed, hence the left demand the lowering of the voting age to give them a better chance of getting a youngsters vote before said youngster does "grow out of it".
Cassa...the difficulty with those subjects is that they tend not to be taught, unless at senior levels.
Basic economics, like mortgages, bank loans and stuff like that, weren't taught when I was at school 50 years ago.....I would like to think matters had changed now, but I am not convinced that they have been.
Mikey - 50 years ago if you wanted a bank loan or a mortgage you had to put on your best suit and grovel. Nowadays you are constantly fending off the offers to give you a loan. Mortgages tended to be for the many years you expected to live in the property, not just a few years, as now. You took a loan/mortgage from anyone who who give you one, so no shopping around and chopping-and-changing as people do now. You worked out whether or not you could afford the repayments and that was it. Economics wasn't quite so complicated in those days.
When we are discussing " 16 year olds " that does include 17 years to 18 years olds as well, some young people are more than able to understand the voting process, some 60 year olds don't .
I'm not talking personal economics, although I also think it is important to be taught, this is what comes in and his is what goes out. If you want to spend more you have to earn more.
However I mean at least basic business economics and how that relats to national and world economics.
Not rocket science but an understanding of where all this free money and such like actually cthe mes from.
Ideology is wonderful when you have no idea how the world works.
