Basically it just Boy Scouts for grown-ups. People outside the Craft may be suspicious but once inside you will find nothing sinister or corrupt. Were it not so I would resign on the spot.
My brother in law is quite high up and belongs to two or three lodges (in fact I think him and his cronies opened a new one) and as Jackdaw says, it's big boy scouts and surprisingly religious.
My dad was even invited to join years ago and he was just a PO. Not even a governor.
Not discrimination just a hang over from the fact it was only frequented so to speak by toffs, senior politicians and senior police and big business people.
But like the round table used to be the poor mans masons.
