Really surprised by the length of the sentence.

When reading these types of story, I don’t know about anyone else, but I think about what sentence will be delivered right when I’m in the first paragraph.

Would never have thought he’d get 17 years.

17 years is not long enough for what he put that poor child through. I also question where the mother was in all of this, but she has never been mentioned. Hope the bairn is in a safe place now.

17 years is a very long time, and I hope he enjoys every moment of it !

But did he really think about what he did ....first...punching the toddler, and second...sending video footage to the grand-parents ?

Not long enough, but he won't do it anyway. Whatever the sentence is you have to halve it and then subtract 20% to get anywhere near the actual time served.
