It's only politicians that make this difficult. I know of someone who was drafted into the Brexit department from the private sector and she gave up after four weeks. Every department is a separate and competeing organisation that is out to protect itself. She said that there were over a hundred government officials and workers BUT she advised getting rid of...

"the DUP could always do the decent thing by their electorate and stay in the EU - they can cede themselves to the republic."
Delusions of grandeur, methinks. I don't think the Northern Ireland Assembly (should it ever reform) has the powers to break the province away from the UK.
The Irish border issue is a non-event magnified out of all proportion by the EU in an effort to destabilise the "negotiations". The EU has land borders with countries that are not EU members and not members of the Customs Union and no "hard" facilities exist. "When it comes to a critical element of Brexit ie NI, you seem to abandon those principles in favour of some blanket coverage."
Te democratic will of the majority who voted was to leave the EU. The democratic will of the people of both the UK and Ireland is for there to be no hard border in Ireland. There is no reason whatsoever why both these wishes cannot be accommodated. There are no democratic principles being abandoned by facilitating those wishes. Quite the opposite, in fact. If they are not accommodated then the will of the people (which is, after all, the very essence of democracy) will be ignored. And it will be ignored because of the intransigence of an unelected bunch of foreign civil servants who see the wishes of the people as a threat to their ideals.
