Togo, Smart meters are for electricity not gas (so far) .
But as the main electricity generation source is Gas turbine generating stations
( that run on the same natural gas we use in our homes) the shortage of gas will also affect electricity generation capacity. Gas shortage will continue to be a problem until our new Nuclear stations comeon line in 10 to 25 years. Once we are Nuclear asFrance

(CCGT Combined cycle gas turbine) which run on the same natural gas we use in our homes , a shortage of gas will also affect electricity generation capacity. Gas shortage will continue to be a problem until our new French / Chinese built Nuclear stations come on-line in 10 to 25 years. Once we are mainly Nuclear as France already is ,there will be a surplus of gas.
Ok, in my region even electric smart meters are not yet available from British Gas ( I have asked for one ) I would have to switch suppliers to get even an electricity smart meter.
Eddie......my smart meter shows my gas and electricity useage.....so they told me......unless you know otherwise? Is a smart meter only for electricity then? If so am I not being billed for my gas useage and should I contact somebody about it?
Islay......I don't really want to do that because I like the little gas symbol on the gadget in my kitchen....it matches the decor for one thing....oh what a quandary....... ;-(
Yes, I have highlighted the problems with smart meters. But there was an offer of free electricity on Saturday or Sunday for the first year, which was too good to miss. But as I said, when I asked British Gas I was told 'smart meters are not yet available for your area'
That was over a year ago and the free power offer has now expired, they may well be available now, I have not bothered to ask again. Latest info is that they will be compulsory by 2020 anyway.
How can anyone compare winters up to 70 years ago to this week? This is modern Britain, not post-war Britain. The country is a hugely different place with up 20 million more people and and a massive increase in industry. People generally worked more locally, there were far fewer cars etc. The country’s infrastructure is vastly different.
There are problems, but as long as you are aware of them it is OK.
A lot of people do not realise that all Smart Meters have a 'remote
disconnect' function which is the main reason for their existence.
