none taken!
I've just bought a new car. (Collect it this morning - yaaay)!
Every dealer I went to, tried flogging me a diesel. Most accepted my "no" straight away, one tried for a while, but one wouldn't let it drop.
Dealers are obviously keen to offload diesels now.
Question Author
yes bigbad, which means used values will plummet.
I would also expect petrol fuelled cars to get tax/ved hikes. The only vehicle with a 'nil' rating will be pure electric power vehicles. You might be lucky and get reduced ved rates for petrol/electric hybrids.
I've got a 9 year old diesel in fabulous condition but probably worth only £2k and has only cost me a set of new tyres and usual service /MOT costs. It's got at least another 10 years life left in it - I can't see how it will save me money to trade it in for a petrol or electric car. Nor will it save the enviroment - surely it is 'greener' to keep a car on the road than scrap it and replace it with a new one with all the pollution and energy waste that involves.
So in a few weeks I will be able to buy a diesel for thousands less and bear a road tax rise of maybe £50-100-ish per year Hmmmm
What is this 'tax' of which you speak?

There is no such thing as road tax.....
I'm not sure I see the logic that if less new diesel cars are being sold, the price of used ones will fall.
Question Author
yes Hc in that case keep it till it dies but expect VED and city charges etc to start to get a lot more over the coming years
quoi: yes but running charges will escalate.
JTT: I think he means VED
Hoppy: well if new prices fall so do used prices and if diesels are less desirable then that to will depress prices.
if the dealers reduce the price to shift them then inevitably second hand values will suffer.
Older cars will drop from £1-2k down to scrap prices.
I was meaning you, TTT, in your OP....
Question Author
JTT I used the phrase "tax hikes" - not referring to a particular avenue for that. It's a general term covering all manner of duty that the motorist is subjected to. Not sure why you are trying to score some sort of points over it. If I had used the Phrase "road tax" as quoi did then I could understand, indeed I actually did support you in your post, believing that you were in fact referring to quoi.
I thought it was for me too - ignored it because I was sure everyone knew what I meant. ;0)
Well if an older diesel gives cheaper motoring then there are many thousands who will continue to buy them.
Question Author
...until government VED/Fuel duty/city charges etc etc make it prohibitive.
Jam jar?
I have a diesal car! Which I intend to keep as I have said before it saves me loads of money each month.
The killer of old deisel vehicles is badly maintained DPF's and parts like clutches etc which cost more thant the car is worth - doubt if 'tax' hikes will be significant enough.
Surely they will push to get the ones that dont conform to euro IV or V off the road first.
Question Author
even when VED is a bag of sand Islay?
Bag of sand?
Sorry I dont understand if you wish to ask me a question can you please do so in a language that is easy to understand!
