A superb darter and a true gent. Recognising the talent of a certain Phil Taylor, later to become 'The Power', he lent the man £10,000 on the proviso he gave up his job and concentrated on his darts. Taylor agreed and rewarded Bristow by beating him 6-1 in the final. Once sat in Eric's company for almost an hour and found him to be a most amusing personality. Almost single-handedly, he dragged the game of darts out of the pubs and into our homes. A couple of Sid Waddell comments for you; "Bristow reasons, Bristow quickens. Aaahhh, Bristow." And, after Eric had won the World Championship, Waddell declared, "When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer. Bristow's only 27." RIP Eric.
A sad loss.
My dad and I once beat him at 501 up. He used to visit my dad's local in Stoke Newington from time to time. For a laugh he'd play a couple of the regulars for a pint. His opponents were allowed six darts to Eric's three. My dad and I scraped home by the skin of our teeth with Eric having uncharacteristically, missed his favourite double 16 three times. Eric bought us a pint each. Oh, I nearly forgot, we had the added advantage that Eric threw his darts whilst kneeling down!
Eric was the epitome of a "good bloke". He never let his fame go to his head and was always willing to enjoy a laugh bit of banter with people he didn't really know. A sad loss.
