Wait...what?

Are you sure about that?

As far as I was aware, the war was not only fought abroad, but here at home.
jno has demonstrated many times he is clueless SP, most of us take no notice.

/// women in the army were "officers' groundsheets" and ATS were "American tail service". ///

Women in the Army were the ATS.
What an almighty fuss over nothing.
I wonder if he tells them that father christmas packs his sleigh with billions of presents and delivers them all during christmas morning
Yes he was wrong because he was factually wrong.

There is nothing to stop him or anyone else saying that “ back then men dominated xyz but now we have a more (not totally but more) equal society and women can do these things as well”

Absolutely spot on.

In fact, if he took that line, his daughters might actually appreciate their good fortune in being born now, rather than then. There’s no point sugar coating the past.
Like others I really don't see the need for a lie. Further, it seems to me invidious that the privations and sacrifices suffered by the whole nation are reduced to a bean-counting exercise: did he/she do more/less than he/she?

Aside from which I've always been a fan of Dan Snow Anybody watch the recent program on the battle of Jutland (BBC4)?
Tora never told your children they was a Father Christmas or a tooth fairy or an Easter bunny?
In most families this would go down as 'Remember the day Daddy said...' and be trotted out at the dinner table.

Why he thought it wise to let the World know I have no idea, a bit silly really.

//I believe it isn't in most women's nature to fight and kill.//

Couldn't agree more - especially a mother. I don't have children but I have two dogs (as many of you know!) - when my dog was attacked I went crazy and surprised myself with my shouting at the bloke and his dog, the same when someone has been on one of those off road motorbikes on a public footpath with my dogs and not slowed down... I stood infront of the bike and demanded he walk it past us. And I'm a friendly person!!

//women did not have a massive role in the war.//

I'm embarrassed that some people think this is true.

To answer the OP, no he shouldn't have lied, he should have explained how far we have come, but explained the vital role women had to play in the war too.
