it's wrong to try and rewite history to how you think it should be. Spitfires were flown by women in the war, they delivered them to the airfields, why not tell them the truth?
No that's a moronic thing to have done. I am so not into the notion that kids aren't able to process and deal with difficult or traumatic things, never mind about simple historical fact, it turns people into useless snowflakes, and we don't need any more of those x
For me it's not a big deal, but shall we say liberal with the truth.
I assume he told them that most the archers at agincourt were women too! What a plonker!
Absolutely wrong. Not only has he, however slight, rewritten history as treble T says but he is also telling his daughter it's OK to lie. How can an historian lie about history?
At some point, the lie will be revealed, and then surely he's just putting himself in a difficult position all over again. Better to have started with the truth -- and then to explain how things have moved on since, etc etc.

i agree what a wang!
as the mum of a six year old, i am constantly telling her she can do anything she wants (currently she wants to be a space vicar) but as jim said, she's gonna find out and then it's going to be #awkward

It's just amazing what they did in the war, I wonder if today's snowflakes would step up when needed like they did.
He could have told her that there were some good sharp-shooters though, like Lyudmila;

he's aware of that, jim, and ready to face the dread moment

Meanwhile, parents ought to stop this Father Chrismas nonsense. Children must be told the truth!
I think that he did what he thought was right - as most parents try to do. It will be something that his daughter will laugh about in years to come, I doubt that the odd white lie here and there is going to cause her problems in the future.

He shouldn't have lied to her, but he did.

next he can tell her how WAAFs were knows as pilots' cockpits, women in the army were "officers' groundsheets" and ATS were "American tail service". Girls are never too young to hear the truth about the British approach to women in uniform in WW2.

I enjoy going to the Guardian opinion articles when I need a good laugh, but not for much else.
women did not have a massive role in the war. They were there to help out in the armed forces and take over men's jobs in civvy street.
