/I think the problem that many of us have is that the roots of Islamic terrorism is actually quite complicated//
Sure, SP. And I don't think anybody's ignoring the geo-political aspects of the phenomenon.
What I'm trying to do is correct for the converse error into which pretty well all Western leaders (inexplicably, in my view, given the resources and the information available to them) which is ignoring the religious and ideological aspects of terrorism.
Islam is not a collection devotional practices and moral homilies, it's a political project and has been from its inception. This is very difficult for Westerners to understand because we think of religion as largely a private matter, even in countries like ours which have a state religion. We believe in democracy, that our laws are made by our elected representatives and should be applied even-handedly to all. None of this attitudes and beliefs are Islamic, in fact they are profoundly un-Islamic.
A snippet of 21st century history from you and a snippet of 7th century history from me:
Mohammed was a judge, a general and a conqueror. He didn't make war because he'd turned his back on some nice luvvy, luvvy trees and fields be nice to people revelations he received from the angel Gabriel in a cave. He was doing what those revelations told him to do. "I have been made victorious through terror".
