But just to highlight the fact that they are not just picking on Islam they announce that the threat from 'extreme right-wing terrorism' was also growing and four plots had been disrupted since March last year.

Would they be four planned peaceful marches of protest?

jno, the women you’re talking about achieved their purpose and stopped. What is the purpose of Islamic terrorists and what will they need to achieve before they stop?
depends who they are, naomi, different ones want different things. Isis are least likely to succeed because the caliphate is unlikely to be tenable in the long run.

But others may adapt their campaigns. The Pankhursts dropped theirs in order to promote war on Germany; Emmeline became a Tory, Christabel became an evangelist, and Sylvia, always my favourite, fought for independence for Ethiopia. Who knows how far the grand old men of al-Qaeda may go if they feel they've achieved their aims?
/I think the problem that many of us have is that the roots of Islamic terrorism is actually quite complicated//

Sure, SP. And I don't think anybody's ignoring the geo-political aspects of the phenomenon.

What I'm trying to do is correct for the converse error into which pretty well all Western leaders (inexplicably, in my view, given the resources and the information available to them) which is ignoring the religious and ideological aspects of terrorism.

Islam is not a collection devotional practices and moral homilies, it's a political project and has been from its inception. This is very difficult for Westerners to understand because we think of religion as largely a private matter, even in countries like ours which have a state religion. We believe in democracy, that our laws are made by our elected representatives and should be applied even-handedly to all. None of this attitudes and beliefs are Islamic, in fact they are profoundly un-Islamic.

A snippet of 21st century history from you and a snippet of 7th century history from me:

Mohammed was a judge, a general and a conqueror. He didn't make war because he'd turned his back on some nice luvvy, luvvy trees and fields be nice to people revelations he received from the angel Gabriel in a cave. He was doing what those revelations told him to do. "I have been made victorious through terror".

jno, //different ones want different things. //

They do? What about those currently murdering and creating havoc in Europe? What is their aim?
// The main inspiration of Middle Eastern terrorism is their sense of injustice.//

I am not sure - when they opened up on the 235 muslims in Sinai - it just seemed because they were the wrong kind of Muslim.

and some one has just written the roots of Islamic fundamentalism go back to Biblical times
anyone spot what is wrong with that ?
( think: 635AD can hardly be called biblical - but hell this is the daily Isis thread on AB!)
Didn't Hagar and Ishmael get kicked out when Sadie got pregnant?

That would give us (understandable) grounds for a grudge.

Oh yeah... they're my exact thoughts every time some Islamic fruitloops go on a rampage on our streets.
Takes your mind off the slow upward creep of fuel prices though.

We're being had, again.

Believe me - some people are. Well, not 'ignoring' per se...it's just the the origins of 21st century terrorism is so incredibly complicated, that for many it's easiest to think of it in terms of "They hate our freedoms and want to destroy the West".

I think you are well-read enough to know that it's fundamentally more complex than that...however, if you start drilling down to understand the complexities of Middle East politics, after half an hour, you will have a) a serious headache and b) a slight nosebleed.
I don't have much difficulty with - I vont you dead....

but then asking: why you do dat den ?
at that time it is All Rather Late .....
Upon returning to this farcically based thread, I felt compelled to just highlight this bit:

AOG in his OP
‘four plots had been disrupted since March last year.
Would they be four planned peaceful marches of protest? ‘

Gromit then picks up on this and comments:
‘You seem to be asserting that 4 peaceful marches have been classed as terrorism threats’

To which AOG then replies:
‘No I haven’t’

Is there any wonder AOGs plots go off course!
v_e, //Didn't Hagar and Ishmael get kicked out when Sadie got pregnant? //

Spot on - not to mention Jacob’s little debacle with Esau later on in the saga.

PP, //some one has just written the roots of Islamic fundamentalism go back to Biblical times

( think: 635AD can hardly be called biblical//

Not ‘someone’ - me – and since Islam dismisses the fact that it was invented in the 7th century AD, there’s nothing wrong with it. Read and learn.

/// The difference is that a murderer has a specific target, and that target is normally a single person (leaving aside serial killers), where a terrorist’s purpose is to strike fear into a large group of people. ///

Ah! Thanks for clearing matters up sp, the madman that killed Jo Cox, wasn't a far-right terrorist at all, he was in fact, just a murderer.

"the grand old men of al-Qaeda" ??????????????????????????????

Well we all know where you are coming from, that's for sure.
///Ah! Thanks for clearing matters up sp, the madman that killed Jo Cox, wasn't a far-right terrorist at all, he was in fact, just a murderer.///

Could he not be both?
I think he was both

Which is true, since the reasons for the arrests have not been mentioned, I was just asking a question. This is AB isn't it.

Is there any wonder AOGs plots go off course! when there are the likes of you around, to steer them off course.
And still he argues. Oh dear.
You don't need anyone to steer them of course, AOG. You put enough poorly thought through invective into your OPs and replies to make it a guarantee. I did advise you years ago to keep your post simple, but you don't seem to have taken any heed.

I am sorry Zac's but I can't cater for all, perhaps you would be better to join in the debates in chatterbank if you want simple.
!// the madman that killed Jo Cox, wasn't a far-right terrorist at all, he was in fact, just a murderer. //

By that logic, the man who killed Lee Rigby wasn’t a terrorist he was just a murderer.
