Italy is refusing to allow a boat with over 600 migrants to dock at it's ports. https://news.sky.com/story/italy-shuts-ports-to-rescue-ship-carrying-over-600-migrants-11401125. Good on Italy. I bet you ask those migrants where they're aiming for, I bet they say England!!

It's part n parcel of living in a big city though innit?
Kromo, are you happy with the idea of these people coming to Britain and milking our cash-strapped system and placing even more strain on our crumbling NHS?

Oh and then there's the crime that a proportion of them will inevitably commit.

I'm sick to death of our goodwill being exploited by an ever- increasing number of self-entitled migrant freeloaders who have no wish to contribute anything to society.
Kromo, can you point out where someone said they want these people to drown? I must have missed that comment.
//It just seems a bit pathetic for comfortable people sitting at their keyboards gleefully wishing for 600 people to drown//

Who's imagination created that statement?
There's no evidence they are trying to get to England. And we don't have the best benefits system in the world.
Personally I'm not convinced by the commonplace idea that migrants are the reason for our NHS falling, but that's another argument. I do see what you mean, though, it's also not feasible to just endlessly let them in.

That's what I mean when I say I don't know what the solution is. It's an irreducibly complicated problem and it is not, imo, helped by people trying to simplify it. I don't envy the people responsible for solving this.
It's quite obvious in the flippant early answers about the fate of these people that you don't particularly care about what happens to them if they don't land. The most probable outcome, as I'm sure you know, is drowning.
Well... as sad as it may be, sometimes you have to lose a few to save a good many more.

Perhaps leaving them to their own fate would eventually serve as a deterrent to those who might otherwise line the pockets of unscrupulous migrant smugglers.
Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to deal with the smugglers?
whilst there is a portal..escapes will be ventured..our shores and resources are finite and something needs to be done to stop the influx... repatriation seems to be the immediate answer..Australia is equally as stringent now...
It's catching them though, Minty. The moment they reach our shores they disappear in all directions.

I do agree though that once nabbed they should be turfed out. No legal aid for some Human Rights Barrister to fight their case ... out and stay out!
NoM

Considering that you wrote this:

//Because the passengers of the Ark [i.e. animals] were more civilised...//

Could you please confirm for me that you consider these people to be human beings at all?
I'm sure everyone would like to offer a safe haven to refugees.
Resources need to be taken into account.
>>>And we don't have the best benefits system in the world.

No but it probably the easiest to fiddle / exploit !

Saw a program a year or so back on C5 I think about "How to get a council house".

A family (husband, wife, 3 kids) arrived in England from an EU country (Romania?). They wanted a council house.

They went to the council offices near Heathrow airport and were told "you cant just come to UK and demand a council house"

They were told it was not likely so the family were then talking about going back home to Romania or whatever.

Then one of the council workers said "We have found you a council house in another city" and the family stood in a circle and did a little dance as they were so happy.

I don't blame them.

Arriving in a country with nothing, offering nothing (he had no job), expecting the children to be schooled, all getting free NHS treatment, probably getting benefits. Are we mad !!!!!

This was just before the Brexit vote and after watching that I decided to vote LEAVE.

I am sick to death of it.

And look at the names of these 4 people arrested for fraud related to Greenfell Tower. Look at the names!

This country (and Europe) is being dragged down and down by our lax (non existent) immigration controls.

Sadly the next "war" in Europe will be between the indigenous populations, and these freeloading immigrants.

Personally I don't care what happens to those immigrants in Italy in the same way I would not care what happened to a person who burgled my house or stabbed one of my family.
Krom, no one is wishing death on them but these are not people whose lives have been destroyed through no fault of their own. They are economic migrants. The simple fact is that from a practical point of view, Europe cannot continue to take everyone who wants to come here. People from the East are coming to Greece and from the West to Italy – both countries experiencing high rates of youth unemployment. There is no sense in encouraging more people to come. The only solution as far as I can see is to refuse them entry. If the rescue ships had no alternative but to take them back to the African coast those making money from the migrant boats would be out of business.

Ummmm, //we don't have the best benefits system in the world.//

As I understand it our benefits system is easier to access than others. The wait is far shorter – and really, we are pretty generous in more ways than one.
Wait! wait! wait! wait!.

For decades you (the UK) has been telling is that you have the best health care system in the world ( and it'e FREE) ...not like those nasty Americans who let you die in the streets for want of medical care.
You have also told the world that the Brits are the most philanthropic society in the world and will look after you (again not like those nasty Americans who only think of themselves and money) and now, you are rejecting those poor immigrants from a crumbling society within whom some may be plotting acts of terrorism (maybe)......then i am really confused.
Kromo, I'm delighted to confirm that I consider these people human beings. Not the most civilised humans, but humans nonetheless.

However, I do not consider them automatically entitled to a place in our society, at our expense.

I hope that answers your question.
Sorry...Guilbert and me overlapped and his was a better post but saying the same thing.
The tide has turned for Britannia
Sink the boats. Get rid of. Message received, no more boats. What then. Mass land marches, miles of migrants snaking ever nearer to infest wealthier nations. Machine gun them. Erect electric fences. They are not going to stop. What to do? Welcome them with love and compassion, understanding their plight? Share or shun...The answer is long term but obvious. Contraception. Severely inforcing birth control. No children to starve and to yearn for something better.
Don’t castigate me for speculation.
