Thank you Mam, so sorry to hear that Rowan, our thoughts are with you at your sad time.
I agree with the mayor, but where does it stop?
It's difficult to know where it starts and ends, only last year this reared its head.

Should we simply accept that that was then and this is now and move on, or make changes?

Do we know who the artist is ? Maybe a Bristolian.
You're right, Mamalynne. so many people make a living out of correctness these days. Let's go back to the Norman Conquest and send those French (Vikings) back. England for the Celts!
Which would you prefer, the lion or a portrait of Jeremy?
Anne, I don't know the artist of the Colston picture.

The Lion picture was purchased by the mayor at a Help the Bristol Homeless Auction and was painted by a young lady following the death of her Father - she has only been painting 9 months.
Thank you M, I meant the lion picture.
No doubt with Bristol attempting to play down it's association with Colson over the last few years I should imagine many local people know who he is. Particularly councillors.

But does it matter whether she would recognise him or not? The fact is she has decided to replace him with a piece belonging to her is understandable. Although I am inclined to agree that the replacement is awful it was bought for philanthropic reasons.
She should give that hideous lion picture back to the homeless and let them auction it again. !!
More PC carp. Colston did a great deal for the city, more than she ever will.
Looks like a monkey with a lion's face.
Her office, her decision, but I wouldn’t have removed the portrait. Edward Colston made his money from what was then a legitimate trade and the Bristol benefitted greatly from his philanthropy. History is history. (The lion is dire).
Apologies to AOG for distraction.

Naomi, a former frequent poster called Venator was asking after you on an earlier thread.
v_e, yes, thanks. I spotted that and responded.

@ 15:21,
It's not difficult to find out
Historic moment as portrait of Edward Colston is removed from Lord ...

1 day ago - The portrait of Edward Colston has been removed from a City Hall office ... was painted by renowned portrait painter Jonathan Richardson.
/// Jonathan Richardson sometimes called "the Elder" to distinguish him from his son was an English artist, collector of drawings, and writer on art, working almost entirely as a portrait-painter in London. Wikipedia
Born: 12 January 1667, London
Died: 28 May 1745, Bloomsbury, London ///

The lion looks like one of those things you buy from places like The Range where you scratch away with a stylus or similar to form an image.

A bit like painting by numbers without the class.
No problem with the removal of the old painting but the lion pic should be sticky-taped to her fridge door... where all the pics by your 7-year-old kid belong.
It's daft to remove these portraits, this happened 200 odd years ago, was wrong but that is part of history. We should not hide history it should be there for all to see and learn from.

If i was here I would have left it up there and given it the middle finger daily and taken amusement on how he would be spinning in his grave !
