But it does not square with the response of the police in the way that was reported, and leads me to wonder if there is more to the story than is being presented here.
I always prefer to wait for more detailed information from other sources, rather than grabbing my pitchfork and lighting my torch because the Mail is on another of its Middle England whip-ups.

Easy meat.
Far easier to arrest a 67 year old JP than to pursue a gang of "civil trespassers" (the term used by the police for three car loads of thugs bearing clubs, iron bars and allegedly a gun). Mr Stringer apparently remains "under investigation" whilst the case against the "civil trespassers" has been closed.

"Had the perps just come from brewery oop north ?"
Don't think so, Baza. It seems some, if not all of the people Mr Stringer assaulted were "of colour" (which I think is a characteristic somewhat rare among "travellers"). Apparently Mr Stringer is being investigated for using the "N" word (the name of Wing Commander Guy Gibson's dog). The story is that the civil trespassers referred to themselves using that term (perfectly acceptable, of course). Mr Stringer repeated it as he was striking them about the fists and boots with his head and was promptly and quite justifiably arrested for racially aggravated assault.

sp1814....I don't know any of the answers to your query BUT, if three cars full of blacks (or whites) pulled up outside my country residence and looked rather aggressive, i would phone the police and expect protection.
Now if whilst awaiting the presence of the police my family were in jeopardy then i would find my hockey stick and preferably a gun.
Daily Mail or no Daily Mail.

The Sun gives a very different version of events.Dispute in garden with a former tenant. Magistrate armed with hockey stick. Other men waiting outside his garden and he used the' n'and 'f' words in a heated confrontation and told them to keep out of his garden. Police were called and magistrate arrested for racially aggravated assault.Afterwards magistrate found large kitchen knife in his garden. Now he plans to take out a private prosecution case against the intruders.
